Job InformationJob Requisition ID: 35671Ministry: Forestry, Parks and TourismLocation: Bow Valley Provincial ParkFull or Part-Time: Full TimeHours of Work: 40 hours per weekRegular/Temporary: RegularScope: Open CompetitionClosing Date: December 18, 2022Classification: Subsidiary 04B 4000 Maintenance Service Worker 2About UsWe support Albertans in being proud stewards of air, land, water, and biodiversity by leading the work required for the desired environmental outcomes and sustainable development of natural resources.RoleAre you looking for an opportunity to work in the outdoors and doing hands-on work to build and maintain trails in the Kananaskis Improvement District Then please consider this exciting opportunity within Alberta Parks Operations.This position reports to the Bow Valley Trails Supervisor and supports the ongoing operation and maintenance of trails and backcountry campgrounds.Primary areas of responsibility include trail maintenance and construction, removal of fallen and dangerous trees, work with helicopters to transport equipment and materials to the site, operation of snow grooming equipment, submitting trail reports, equipment maintenance, building of trail structures such as bridges, and signage installation.Key job duties include:

  • Mechanized winter ski and fat bike trail grooming
  • Summer multi-use trail maintenance with various tools
  • Servicing backcounty campgrounds and washrooms
  • Operating a variety of equipment such as snowmobiles, snowcats, dumptrucks, skid steer loaders, atvs, and excavators
  • Following OH&S protocols to ensure a safe working environment
  • Interacting with the public and volunteers on the trails
  • Administrative duties such as trail, grooming, and incident reports
QualificationsEducation and Experience:
  • Some high school education and one year related experience
Additional Requirements:
  • Class 5 or equivalent Driver’s License
Assets:
  • Class 3 or Class 1 Driver’s License
  • Ability to effectively operate a wide variety of machinery, equipment, and hand tools (chain saw, brush saw, wood chipper and log splitter) confidently and safely; able to follow operations manuals; complete routine maintenance as required
  • Experience in trail maintenance and construction
  • Ability to travel safely in an outdoor environment in all kinds of weather and conditions including night time shifts
  • Wilderness safety and how to deal with wildlife encounters
  • Wilderness First Aid training
  • Good administrative skills – ability to work on a computer, complete timesheets and meet deadlines
  • Excellent knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations
  • Ability to provide great customer service when interacting with public on the trails

  • This position is based on a Monday – Friday, 40 hour compressed work week with alternating Fridays as a day of rest in the summer and a modified 4-day work week including shift work during the winter.
