Halton Children’s Water Festival Co-CoordinatorContract, 4-months - starting JulyConservation Halton was established more than 60 years ago to protect our communities from flooding and erosion and manage and restore natural resources of the watershed. If you are looking to join an environmentally-focused and socially-conscious community organization, then we are looking for you!Your OpportunityReporting to the Coordinator of Community Outreach and Engagement, your core focus will be to support the planning, coordination, execution, and evaluation of the Halton Children’s Water Festival (HCWF). This position also supports other educational programming and community outreach initiatives within the Education and Outreach group.What is the Halton Children’s Water FestivalThe Halton Children’s Water Festival is a community initiative that involves Halton Region (co-presenter), local municipalities, school boards and community organizations. It is an educational field trip for students in grades two through five, with a mission to further educate the Halton community about their local watershed and the value of the plants and animals that live within it.The event is held outdoors, at Kelso Conservation Area in Milton, Ontario. It educates elementary students about all things water through interactive, curriculum-linked, activity stations and engages high school students through volunteer engagement as activity presenters. The steering committee also works with local organizations in the field who act as external activity providers.The HCWF Co-coordinator will:1. Halton Children’s Water Festival

  • Plan, organize, and execute the Halton Children’s Water Festival, tasks include some of the following:
    • Work with the festival steering committee and its respective subcommittees to coordinate water festival programming, logistics, communication pieces, etc.
    • Act as the lead during festival set-up, execution and take-down; be the on-site specialist for vendors, logistics and key volunteers
    • Book and organize event logistics including busing, food, tent and outdoor washroom providers, vendors and activity presenters; provide them with necessary information leading up to and/or during the event to ensure they are equipped to participate
    • Manage a team of staff and community volunteers leading up to, and during the festival; assign appropriate volunteer roles and ensure community volunteers have the proper materials to successfully participate at the event
    • Administer teacher orientation workshops as well as high school orientation workshops
    • Respond to inquiries from teacher participants
    • Manage website updates, registration opening and online registration process
    • Review and update festival safety protocols, following Conservation Halton Health and Safety standards
    • Network with internal and external organizations
2. General Outreach
  • Support Conservation Halton’s other community outreach programs and represent the organization at community events
  • Other duties as required to contribute to the team effort and to achieve the objectives of the Outreach department and Conservation Halton
Your Qualifications
  • Post secondary education in a related discipline
  • 2-3 years’ experience in event planning, project management or recreation/education programming
  • Experience motivating and working with volunteers and/or committees and working groups
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and its suite of applications, specifically Excel
  • Able to travel to various sites across the watershed not serviced by public transportation, have a valid Driver’s Licence
  • This position will work event hours on the evening and weekend, specifically leading up to the event, availability during that time will be required
  • Must be detail-oriented, capable of following a workplan
  • Experience working with students, specifically high school students an asset
  • Highly organized, can stay focused in a fast-paced, task heavy environment; specifically, in the Summer/Fall leading up to the event
  • Proven leadership skills, can identify what needs to be done without being asked
  • Good team member, who takes responsibility for their tasks and is aware of time management
  • Strong communication and relationship building skills
  • Quick thinker who is comfortable working outdoors or under adverse conditions
  • Experience working with children and youth or in environmental programming an asset
