An international destination with easy access to its binational U.S. neighbour New York State, Niagara attracts over 14 million visitors annually, as well as a steady stream of new residents and businesses.Please note that the Niagara Region requires that all newly hired employees are to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of being hired and provide proof of full vaccination, or provide proof of a bona fide medical or Human Rights Code exemption on a form issued from and approved by Niagara Region.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYThis position works as a Collection & Diversion student to assist primarily the on-road staff (Collection & Diversion Advisors, Contract Supervisors and the Supervisor, Collection and Diversion Operations). We encourage you to review the Job Descriptions of these positions for more information.The Collection & Diversion student works out of the Recycling Centre, with travel throughout Niagara on a regular basis. The position reports to the Supervisor, Collection & Diversion Operations.Duties include:1. Educate residents on proper rules and procedures for setting out material for collection.2. Provide educational and program information to residents while in the field.3. Assist in the monitoring of the curbside collection contractor to ensure the requirements directly affecting residents are adhered to including but not limited to proper bin placement, following the proper tagging procedures, picking up the required limits, bin placement, emptying bins completely, not collecting inappropriate material, collection of booked bulk and white goods, etc.4. Provide field support for on-road and management staff.5. Monitor, track and provide correction for problem locations.6. Acts as Regional representative to the Public.SKILLS

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to work independently, manage and resolve daily issues
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to negotiate and persuade
  • Ability to effectively manage confidential information
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite of products
  • Possesses good public relations skills to effectively maintain a positive public image of the Region when dealing with all stakeholders
  • Ability to deal with potentially upset citizens
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be a student either currently or starting/returning to post-secondary studies in September 2020
  • Must have a valid, unrestricted Class “G” driver’s license
  • Will be required to operate a Regional vehicle
  • Must have CSA approved, over-the-ankle work boots
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a related post-secondary program
  • This position is scheduled 40 hours per week, 5 days per week. Some evening/weekend work may be required. Start/end times may vary but will start as early as 6:15 a.m. and end as late as 5:30 p.m.
