An international destination with easy access to its binational U.S. neighbour New York State, Niagara attracts over 14 million visitors annually, as well as a steady stream of new residents and businesses.Please note that the Niagara Region requires that all newly hired employees are to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of being hired and provide proof of full vaccination, or provide proof of a bona fide medical or Human Rights Code exemption on a form issued from and approved by Niagara Region.Job DescriptionJOB SUMMARYThe Infrastructure Planning & Development Engineering team has a 12 month paid position available for a current Student (degree/diploma in progress), or, Intern (recent graduate). This is an excellent opportunity for a current student or recent graduate in an Engineering, Environmental or related field to gain valuable work experience.The Development Approvals Student/Intern will primarily assist the Development Approvals Technicians in reviewing and approving technical development applications (severances, minor variances, site plans, subdivisions, MOE - environmental compliance certificates, etc.) with respect to impacts to/integration with Regional Public Works related infrastructure (water, sanitary, storm and roads etc.). A component of this job will be updating the internal Geographic Information System (GIS) database for Development Application Recording & Tracking System (iDARTS) with historical servicing drawings (MOE Environmental Compliance Certificates). There will be job shadowing of the Development Approvals Technicians to assist with the review and processing of development applications including assisting with updating standard conditions of approval.EDUCATION

  • Completion of high school diploma or equivalency (i.e. GED) is required
  • Must meet ONE of the following requirements in a post-secondary degree/diploma program in Engineering, Environmental or a related course of study:
  • Students: Must be be currently enrolled (ex. on a co-op)
  • Interns: Must have graduated within the last 12 months (or will successfully complete prior to starting this position)
KNOWLEDGE
  • Knowledge of civil engineering concepts
  • Knowledge/experience related to municipal infrastructure (ex. Water, wastewater, roads, etc.)
  • Knowledge of planning theory and practice would be an asset
  • Knowledge of or experience working with Access or other databases would be an asset
SKILLS
  • Ability to work unsupervised and independently, but also as a team member
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Highly developed communication skills - oral, written and graphics
  • Self-motivated with proven initiative
  • Strong computer skills and proficient use of the Microsoft Office suite of products
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and other technical documents
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle would be an asset, but not required
  • Must provide proof of enrollment in a related post-secondary course of study
  • Must be able to work full-time starting in May 2022
