Job Description

Mission for this Position:About UsAt Baffinland, we work and live beyond the Arctic Circle, mining iron ore at our Mary River Property, located in the Qikiqtani Region of Nunavut on Baffin Island; one of the world’s most captivating and seldom seen destinations. We are looking for people ready to share, build, and grow with our company.Report to the Environmental and Regulatory Compliance Manager and deliver on routine reporting and permitting requirements stipulated by the Commercial Lease, Project Certificate, Water Licences and other regulatory instruments, legislation and approvals (i.e. DFO authorizations, NPRI, GHG, OBPS, MDMER etc.). Coordinate and implement modifications to existing permits/approvals and will work closely with engineering, site operations and site environment teams. Responsible for coordination and completion of annual reporting. Responsible for leading the development of the Project’s Annual Work Plan and Annual Marginal Reclamation Security Review. As the Project continues to develop, involved in updating the Project’s Environmental Management and Monitoring Plans to ensure the Plans reflect Project operations and procedures. Support site environment teams with the coordination of site monitoring activities including the management of consultants and contractors.Main Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for taking a lead role in the coordination and development of regulatory reports and applications required for Project operations including regulatory requirements stipulated by the Commercial Lease, Project Certificate, water licences and other regulatory instruments, legislation and approvals (i.e. DFO authorizations, NPRI, GHG, OBPS, MDMER, etc.).
  • Responsible for developing a proficient understanding of applicable environmental regulations and legislation and communicating implications on Project operations to management.
  • Update Project Environmental Management and Monitoring Plans to reflect Projection operations and procedures.
  • Responsible for taking a lead role in the development of the Project’s Annual Work Plan and Annual Marginal Reclamation Security Review.
  • Support and coordinate audits and verification of environmental data.
  • Support the coordination of environmental monitoring programs and initiatives in tandem with site environment teams.
  • Attend meetings and liaise with federal and territorial agencies, as well as the Qikiqtani Inuit Association
  • Provide regulatory advice to support Projects and Operations teams in project planning
  • Support Baffinland participation in technical conferences and industry associations
Main Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Water Management, Environmental Science or related programs
  • From 3 to 5 years of relevant work experience in the environmental reporting, environmental site management or environmental field
  • Knowledge of and/or experience developing aquatic monitoring studies
  • Knowledge of regulatory landscape in Nunavut
  • Knowledge of federal greenhouse gas reporting program
  • Knowledge of reclamation security processes in the mining sector
  • High level written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in regulatory reporting and technical writing.
  • Experience in mining operations and resource projects.
  • Results oriented with strong project management and analytical skills.
  • Flexibility to travel to remote northern locations, as required.
  • Technical experience in determining mine reclamation security requirements and developing mine closure management plans considered an asset.
  • Proficient with MS Office, SharePoint, Excel.
