Job Description

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:The incumbent provides writing, editorial, media/public relations and related consulting services to the Durham College Communications and Marketing department and its various clients within Durham College. He/she informs the media, current and potential college clients, stakeholders and the community of important news about the college and projects and fosters a very high image of the college among these groups. Leads key college projects including the creation and execution of internal communication, marketing and strategic planning; media relations; speech writing; crisis communication; ongoing annual projects such as the college guide and viewbooks, content and design of PowerPoint presentations for DCLT members; support of annual and one-off events (e.g. Convocation, Employee Appreciation, minister visits, donation events, etc.); management of awards submissions; media training of senior-level staff; support of president’s office such as strategic planning, annual report and business plan; and ongoing writing and editing support for all college departments.Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:External Communications:

  • Develop and execute external communications plans to support college initiatives and business plan goals
  • Write and edit key publications, documents, content and materials, including web features, blogs, corporate publications (annual reports, business plans, etc.), viewbooks, flyers, print and radio ads, external correspondence, promotional content, email copy, student recruitment and conversion campaigns
  • Provide issues management expertise and support, including crisis communications and emergency planning
  • Deliver communications support for key events including annual convocation ceremonies, open house recruitment events, student orientation and campus initiatives such as Social Justice Week, Career Fair, grand openings, etc.
  • Prepare speeches and remarks for college leadership members including college president
  • Collaborate with external partners on joint communications projects and initiatives
Internal Communications:
  • Develop and execute internal communications plans to support college initiatives and business plan goals.
  • Draft and distribute internal email communications to employees and students to share important college news and information.
  • Draft and post content and information on employee intranet site (ICE).
  • Provide communications counsel to internal clients and departments.
  • Collaborate with internal clients to support internal corporate initiatives.
  • Support key internal events and projects including academic kickoff, employee appreciation awards, and annual fundraising initiatives.
Media Relations:
  • Write media releases and advisories.
  • Co-ordinate on-campus media visits for campus events.
  • Prepare media documentation for spokespeople such as Q&As and key messages, and media preparation documents.
  • Write and pitch editorial content to media outlets.
  • Co-ordinate interviews with spokespeople/media outlets.
  • Perform proactive and reactive media relations.
  • Support media crisis communications and issues management.
  • Prepare media training presentations and conduct media training sessions for college spokespeople.
  • Develop annual editorial calendar.
  • Monitor and reporting of media coverage.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Three-year diploma or degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or English.
  • Minimum five years of experience in a communications role across a minimum of two different sectors.
  • Proven record of successfully developing and executing comprehensive communications plans that meet goals.
  • Extensive experience writing effective and creative media releases, blogs, web stories, speeches, video scripts, promotional copy, corporate publications, editorials, etc.
  • Superior writing ability, along with excellent organizational, multi-tasking and project management skills.
  • Strong research, interviewing, fact-checking and proofreading skills.
  • Understanding of editorial design and a good grasp of CP style and internal and external communications practices.
  • Excellent customer service, problem-solving and collaboration skills.
  • Solid understanding of media relations, social media and web writing practices.
  • Experience with social media platforms, PowerPoint and media monitoring platforms.
