Job Description

The Niagara Detention Centre is seeking a Rehabilitation Officer to provide classification, rehabilitation, and discharge planning services for inmates.What can I expect to do in this role

  • Gather information for the classification and discharge planning process by interviewing inmates, liaising with other sources (i.e. police, family, employer, Ministry staff), and reviewing relevant documents
  • Facilitate inmate orientation programs and provide advice, counselling, and information pertaining to institutional adjustment, institutional program availability, and discharge planning
  • Complete classification documents
  • Instruct offenders in basic rehabilitation groups
  • Assist in the formulation of discharge plans
  • Participate in various committees
  • Other duties, as assigned
How do I qualifySpecialized Knowledge and Experience
  • You have knowledge of the justice system, court processes, and court documentation
  • You have understanding of risk and needs assessment tools
  • You are able to facilitate rehabilitation programs for inmates
  • You are able to understand and interpret information from police
  • You have knowledge of community agencies and resources to assist in the rehabilitation of inmates
  • You understand the various sectors involved in the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders after release (i.e. mental health agencies, shelters, employment services, etc.)
Communication (Oral and Written) and Interpersonal Skills
  • You have knowledge of interviewing techniques
  • You are able to liaise with institutional staff, inmates families, Probation and Parole offices, community contacts, and inmates
  • You have experience liaising with community partners and stakeholders in order to host case conferences and discuss issues
  • You have collaboration experience within a multi-disciplinary team
  • You have demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality according to legislative requirements (i.e. FIPPA)
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer software packages and database systems in order to input and retrieve data as well as prepare and maintain reports/statistics
Analytical, Investigative, and Evaluative Skills
  • You can obtain information and make recommendations based on established criteria on offender classification and suitability for program placement
  • You are able to prepare discharge plans as well as identify and resolve issues
  • You are able to understand and comply with relevant legislation (i.e. Ministry of Correctional Services Act) and regulations as well as corporate policies and procedures
