At Powell, we provide a comprehensive salary package, RRSP matching, extensive benefits and job training all within a professionalamp; friendly working environment.Based out of the Powell Service Division (PSD) location, the Senior Mechanical Designer will report to the Manager of Technical Services. The Senior Mechanical Designer will be responsible for modifying, enhancing, and creating established standard designs and parts for products.Essential Responsibilities- Design custom/semi-custom product assemblies to meet customer mechanical specification (Medium Voltage Switchgear, MCC, Bus Duct, NEMA Enclosures).- Create basic design drawings.- Develop shop drawings and welding instructions for fabrication.- Develop drawings to support the assembly department.- Check and verify design drawings to conform to specifications and design data.- Assist Mechanical Engineering efforts in product development process.- Work with the production team to assist in solving shop problems.- Verify designs meet CSA, ANSI, CEC, and IEEE standards.- Attend in-house and outside training sessions as required.- Learn policies and procedures, work instruction, ISO policies, Safety Rules and Regulations, and vendor products.- Other duties as required.Core Competencies- Basic drafting / 3D CAD skills.- Ability to read and interpret electrical symbols, characters, and drawings.- Ability to order materials electronically.- Knowledge of electrical design, industry codes and standards.- Ability to apply (informed by others what is required, and which code) ANSI, CEC, and other standards.- Familiar with strengths of materials, design of copper, and sheet steel drafting standards.- Ability to learn and apply industry safety rules and regulations.- Knowledge of and ability to apply company policies/procedures and ISO policies and procedures.- Understanding of vendor product offerings and how they are incorporated into product design.- Strong communication, organizational and problem solving skills.- Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment.Qualifications- Working towards BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Technology.- Mechanical Engineering Technical/Technologist Diploma or Certificate is preferred.- Minimum 5 years of experience in an Engineering/Designing role.- Previous experience in designing Medium Voltage Equipment is considered an asset.- Experience using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD is considered an asset.- Experience in 3D modelling and drafting is considered an asset.- Basic computer skills using Oracle, Word, Excel.Working Conditions- Temperature controlled working environment.- Must wear personnel protective equipment at all times (i.e., hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses as required) and respirators when required while in the shop.- Must be able to work from all types of ladders (step ladders,quot;A quot; frame ladders, and all-size extension ladders).- Job requires working in an office/shop setting.- Working in front of a computer for the majority of the shift.Physical Requirements- Maintaining body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs.- Bending the body at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner.- Standing, walking, and speaking for long periods of time.- Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force up to 20 lbs.- Typing, punching or applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.- Perceiving size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with the fingertips.Who We ArePowell Canada Inc. is a subsidiary of Powell Industries, which is located in Houston, Texas.
