Job Description

Northland Logistics Corp. is looking to fill a dispatch position at the Airdrie, Ab branch. The dispatcher will oversee the planning, implementation, execution, monitoring, asset allocation, and directing work of a specific projects or job. The dispatch candidate shall be responsible to ensure that company drivers, equipment, as well as lease operators and/or subcontractors are allocated in a manner that will uphold the company standards of customer service and compliance while retaining the respect and confidence of the customer. This will be accomplished by:Setting a good example, Leadership by example

  • Obtaining complete instructions when taking telephone and email orders from customers
  • Promoting and directing effective utilization of personnel and equipment through continued knowledge of their location, availability, geographic areas and field conditions;
  • Promoting effective communication between management, supervisors, and the drivers;
  • Developing a working knowledge of all commodities transported by the company, as well as all regulations, operating authorities and permits pertinent to the company operation;
  • Verifying, on an ongoing basis, the safest considerations and practices are applied in all dispatch activities;
  • Comprehensive understanding of Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and USA permitting requirements for oversized and overweight cargo;
  • Dispatcher shall assist and consult with permit coordinator in the development, refinement, and application of all permit and line lift requirements related to over-dimensional and overweight cargo for a specific project.
  • Dispatcher is to keep the schedules properly updated, and to see that the job meets the various required dates. Communicates with customers.
  • Dispatch is expected to receive, review and approve employee and subcontractor Daily Reports and Bill of Ladings of work done; labor, equipment and materials employed.
  • Ensure all billing documentation associated with a designated job is accounted for and coded as per invoicing requirements; then submitted to the Administration department within 24 hours after completion of the job or project.
  • Build and maintain exceptional customer relationships. Be professional and address any customer concerns immediately.
  • Act as a liaison to drivers, support personnel, management and senior management.
  • Ensuring driver personnel dispatched are in compliance with “Hours of Service” requirements;
Promote positive attitudes among all operator personnel by:
  • Distributing the workload equitably, based on demand, the demonstrated skills, training, capability and availability of each person;
  • Assigning jobs in accordance with company policy and procedure, as well as applicable regulations;
  • Communicating accurate information to operators regarding the dispatch. This is to ensure operators do not encounter an unfamiliar facility, route, procedures, etc. that may lead to a potential and unnecessary incident.
  • Verbally recognizing operators for commendable service and/or performance, as well as noting this recognition in their personnel file;
  • Must be aware of and reporting to management, any situations and/or actions that indicate an individual may be experiencing personal or job-related problems that could lead to a more serious situation for the individual or the company, if not promptly rectified;
  • Follow all company policies and procedures applicable to this position and to perform all other duties as assigned; be familiar with the company’s policies and procedures;
  • Ensuring all regulations and safety policies are implemented, administered, enforced and communicated to all personnel under their supervision;
  • Assisting with investigations, reporting, making appropriate recommendations and conducting a “follow-up communication of near miss, incident, collision and/or hazardous condition situations;
  • Ensuring the equipment under their supervision is capable of and designed for the task in which it is being used;
  • With communication and assistance from the Management and Safety department ensure all personnel under their supervision maintain current and/or valid “Certificates of Training”;
  • Being a resource person to Management and the Safety Department, in the continuing development of the Safety Management System and related issues;
  • Being aware of and reporting to Management and/or the Safety Department, any situations and/or actions that indicate an individual may be experiencing personal or job-related problems that could lead to a more serious situation for the individual or the company, if not promptly addressed;
