We’re a place where you just might be a perfect fit.Our Team:Budget and Financial Planning is an internal facing business unit under Corporate Services that ensures accuracy and integrity of financial transactions and reporting systems to safeguard the assets of the city for the citizens of Airdrie, internal customers, and regulatory bodies. We optimize the use of financial resources through effective financial planning.The Opportunity:Reporting to the Team Leader of Budget and Financial Planning, this full-time Financial Analyst position is responsible for providing financial support to various departments in the City of Airdrie. This position is responsible for compiling budgets and quarterly variances and applying Public Sector Accounting Board (PSAB) standards and procedures to analyze financial information. The Financial Analyst prepares accurate and timely reports, statements and analysis packages for external and internal management reporting. The successful candidate will be proactive, take initiative, have analytical and innovative problem-solving skills and be adaptable to various environments and situations.Responsibilities:Planning and Budgeting:

  • Plan, develop and coordinate all long-term planning budgetary functions, identify opportunities (e.g., potential revenue streams) and risk; advise on best practices for internal control systems and procedures in accordance with policies, regulations, procedures and standards
  • Assist with the preparation of multi-year operating and capital budgets and financial forecasts based on strategic objectives, targets, staffing requirements and other commitments
  • Proactively communicate and work collaboratively with client groups to provide direction and guidance to them regarding financial activities
Data Analysis and Quarterly Reporting:
  • Prepare and monitor quarterly projections and budget allocations ensuring that the financial records within the assigned client groups are accurate and complete. Work with client groups to prepare short and long-term revenue/expense projections for operating and capital budgets
  • Monthly reconciliation and analysis of accounts (maintain, review, and assist with account reconciliation, journal entries and analysis to ensure proper allocations to general ledger accounts)
  • Prepare various reports in collaboration with the Team Leader for quarterly financial reporting, budget amendments, capital requirements and analysis of financial performance
  • Responsible for providing strategic financial analysis to provide insights to current performance and outcomes
Policies, Procedures and Compliance:
  • Review processes and provide recommendations to implement improvements regarding financial functions, including effectiveness and efficiency improvements through consultation and providing training and support where needed
  • Ad hoc policy research/financial analysis of city operations and assist with internal control compliance as required
  • Create and draft policies and procedures as required
  • Develop tools to support process improvements
Other Duties:
  • Provide direction and guidance to employees involved with financial activities. Proactively communicate and collaborate with departments and budget managers to analyze financial needs
  • Work with external auditors on the annual financial audit
  • Conduct benchmarking and research activities in support of continuous improvement efforts and best practices within a municipal government environment
  • Assist with the development and creation of business cases and reports for leadership and Council as required
  • Participate in applicable team meetings at the team and directorate level, as required
  • Cross train with other finance team members, provide back-up coverage
You Bring:
  • A Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Accounting or Finance
  • Accounting designation (CPA) is required
  • The successful applicant will possess a minimum of 5 years’ experience in financial accounting
  • Previous Municipal experience would be an asset
  • Strong working knowledge of financial accounting systems as well as Microsoft Office with advanced Excel skills is required
  • Broad understanding of accounting procedures including demonstrated experience in interpretation and application
  • Experience in preparing analytical documentation and reports
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy while working on numerous routine and ad hoc accounting functions
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and planning skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong report writing and presentation skills
  • Supportive attitude towards process improvement and technological advancement
  • Strong customer service and relationship building skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced, deadline driven role, while adapting to a changing and challenging work environment
  • Ability to perform effectively both independently and in a team oriented environment
  • Quick learner and self-starter with a practical and flexible approach to work and the ability to research topics effectively
