Job Description

Alberta Pound and Rescue Centres (APARC) is a charitable organization that provides pound and rescue services to Airdrie, Medicine Hat and surrounding communities. APARC in Airdrie, Alberta is now accepting applications for Kennel Assistants.A kennel Assistant will be responsible for carrying out duties relating to daily care of APARC animals in an animal shelter environment. These responsibilities will vary with the current needs of the staff, the season of the year, and the individual abilities demonstrated by the employee. Generally, this includes:

  • ‪Adhering to protocols for the care of animals, sanitation, and cleanliness of facility
  • Providing appropriate feeding regimens at given schedules
  • Administering medications to cats and dogs
  • Attending veterinary appointments
  • Maintaining animal files for quality assurance
  • Appropriately handle animals of various demeanors safely and humanely
  • Assisting with foster and adoption coordination by following up with applicants, and creating appointments for the release/return of animals
  • Addressing and resolving foster, volunteer, and adopter concerns and inquiries
  • Assisting in the ongoing creation of new programs as needed to increase adoption and volunteerism
  • Participating in fundraising and educational activities
The ideal candidate must possess a positive attitude, excellent client service and interpersonal skills, strong communication skills, the ability to multitask and work efficiently under minimal supervision.Although not strictly required, the following are qualifications we think are needed to complete the job:
  • ‪Some prior experience at a boarding kennel or animal shelter
  • Demonstrated experience in customer service and customer care environments
  • ‪Demonstrated ability to communicate
  • Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Capable of multitasking and prioritizing
  • ‪Ability to handle animals and assist in euthanasia procedure as needed
  • Experience with using technology to assist your daily work activities, including Slack, Monday.com, Outlook, Gsuite, and more
  • Problem solving skills – focusing on finding solutions to problems and challenges
  • The ability to remain pleasant and calm even in stressful situations as well as the ability to ask appropriate questions to gather information
  • Flexibility, ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Ability and initiative, work with minimal supervision and direction
