Our team is driven to ensure accuracy and compliance within our Human Capital Management (HCM) software, with Alberta Labour Standards and the Canadian Revenue Agency. If you like strong processes and you thrive on repetitive and cyclical work, then this might be the right team for you.The Opportunity:This is a senior level role and is responsible to provide payroll expertise to the department and ensure accuracy of all payroll functions. It ensures the City of Airdrie is compliant with provincial and federal legislation as it relates to payroll. This role also looks after payroll transactions, payroll accounting, auditing and reporting of payroll activities and responds to escalated pay concerns with appropriate resolutions. It ensures a high level of customer service to our internal and external customers by ensuring pay is accurate and on time.Primary accountabilities include:

  • Plan, prepare and allocate workflows and responsibilities based on coming priorities
  • Review time entry and monitor exceptions on a bi-weekly basis to ensure compliance with legislation and labour standards
  • Responsible for accurate pay processing before finalizing, processing and transmitting payroll
  • Monitor the payroll inbox and ensure files are saved and actioned appropriately
  • Assist with internal audits on a regular basis
  • Assist with external payroll and pension audit requirements
  • Laisse with the Finance and Accounting departments with reconciliations
  • Assist Practitioner II as needed with processing of the biweekly pay cycle, payroll folders and post pay checklist
  • Train Practitioner II to correct errors and help develop knowledge and skills
  • Identify errors and recommend process improvements and efficiencies
  • Responsible for the preparation and processing of year end tasks (ie: T4’s, LAPP, APEX, WCB Annual Statement)
  • Respectful interactions with team and customers, both internal and external
You Bring:
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) required
  • Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) – an asset
  • Diploma in Accounting or similar field an asset
  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in a full cycle pay
  • Prior experience processing full cycle year end activities
  • Knowledge in HRIS Systems and report writing tools
  • Highly proficient in computer skills and technology including Microsoft Office and Excel
  • Understanding of basic accounting principles
  • Analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly self-motivated and self-directed
  • Willing to do what it takes, to get it done on time and accurately
  • Strong customer service focus
  • Ability to build and maintain strong collaborative relationships
  • High level of confidentiality with the ability to always maintain company and employee confidentiality
