Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) Position (1.0 FTE) - Interlake RegionReports to: EIS Program Director1. Work collaboratively with the school to ensure that needs of both schools, students and parents are addressed2. Provide information/referrals to students and families regarding education and community resources3. Interpretation and translation of documents, meetings, gatherings that pertain to school4. School staff has increased awareness of newcomer issues5. Assess and Evaluate needs of students and families in relation to education and in the community6. Develop rapport with students through regular school visits and activities7. Design school orientations for newcomer students and parents8. Design and Coordinate presentations regarding Canadian culture in the Education system (Parent teacher interviews, report cards, graduation, extra-curricular activities at school, etc)9. Design and coordinate presentations that are relevant to student life (winter weather, job search)10. Problem solve with schools on behavioral issues that teachers may be coming in contact with11. Provide culturally appropriate training or access to training for high school students looking for jobs12. Design and coordinate in collaboration with school staff, programs that will connect parents and families with schools13. Network with organizations that directly affect students between the ages of 5-18 years (school age)14. Conduct needs assessments with students and families15. Refer families when issues are outside of school (CFS, finances, document renewals)16. Keep up to date client progress notes17. Complete monthly reports18. Report at weekly check-ins of the progress of program19. 1 monthly home visit20. Assess and Evaluate program on an ongoing basis21. Produce and distribute SWIS promotional materials22. Provide cultural background information to school staff as needed23. Assist school with initiating contact with all newcomer families24. Participate on committees, workshops and conferences as the school sees fit25. Provide service in accordance with the policies, guidelines, and protocols of the program and the Hanover and Seine River School Division26.
