Job Description

Consultant of Student ServicesAnnapolis Valley Regional Centre for EducationConsultant of Student Services1.00 FTEVacantTerms and conditions of employment, including wages, are in accordance with the Nova Scotia Teachers Provincial AgreementClosing Date: Midnight, September 12th, 2022Reporting to the Coordinator of Student Services, for the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education.Role:

  • Provide support to students with significant learning and behavioural challenges or who demonstrate complex needs including but not exclusive to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder within the Provincial Regional Centres of Education and CSAP.
  • Provides support to school teams and staff in the design and implementation of behaviour plans and specific teaching strategies to support student learning.
  • Works within the Inclusive Policy and MTSS framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students within the school setting.
Qualifications and Abilities:
  • Registered or eligible to be registered with Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology (NSBEP);
  • A Masters in School Psychology or its equivalent and/or BCBA Certification in good standing with the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board OR completion of a Masters level program in Applied Behavioural Analysis, and currently undergoing supervision to obtain BCBA certification;
  • A minimum of five years successful experience, including demonstrated effective programming skills for children/youth with challenging complex academic, social-emotional and behavioural challenges;
  • Relevant and extensive training and experience in programming for students with Autism, ADHD, Learning Disabilities and Trauma-informed practices; Displayed in-depth understanding of Inclusion and MTSS to provide support to teachers and students at all 3 tiers using evidence-based practices;
  • Familiarity with, and/or experience working in multi-disciplinary inter-sectorial programs for communities that are marginalized;
  • Excellent leadership, relational, team building, communication and interpersonal skills/abilities.
Responsibilities:
  • Conduct Functional Behaviour Assessments to develop behaviour intervention plans;
  • Participate on school teams to assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of complex behaviour plans for individuals and groups of students;
  • Provide concentrated time working with school teams and individual teachers in providing programming for students with complex emotional and behavioural problems;
  • Contribute to the assessment of students with complex behavioural problems;
  • Share the responsibility of interpreting and reporting assessments and other information with parents, teachers, administrators and other professionals to meet the needs of students with complex behavioural problems;
  • Work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, parents and students in the design, implementation and review of individual program plans, behaviour plans, etc.;
  • Actively participate in school-based teams when collectively making decisions about risk behaviours of students with violent behaviours;
  • Provide professional development opportunities as determined by the Coordinator of Student Services;
  • Assist schools in problem-solving around complex behavioural problems;
  • Provide leadership in the area of Positive Effective Behavior Support, Non-violent crisis intervention strategies;
  • Cooperate and collaborate with community partners in the development and implementation of programs to support students at risk.
Competencies Required:
  • Proven ability to work as a contributing member of Student Planning and Teaching Support Teams;
  • The ability to develop, implement and evaluate professional learning for adults;
  • Training and experience in developing and implementing individualized intervention programs and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students;
  • Excellent communication (written, oral and electronic), problem solving and interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to apply training and experience to develop and implement individualized intervention programs and teaching strategies based on the individual needs of students;
  • Possess knowledge of Provincial and Regional Education Centre or CSAP policies, guidelines and procedures and the rights and responsibilities of parents, students, teachers and schools as they relate to individuals with special needs.
