  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining live bird welfare of each live load upon arrival at MLF and during holding, through to their transfer to processing.
  • Responsible for the transfer of care from Live Haul Drivers to MLF. Ensures process and documents are completed properly and reports issues to management.
  • Understands basic bird behaviour and reports any issues with live loads to Live Haul Dispatch to ensure that loads exhibiting signs of stress are prioritized in the processing sequence.
  • Monitors all loads for bird condition and dead-on-arrival (DOA) birds.
  • Monitors and documents bird condition on an hourly or bihourly basis during holding.
  • Responsible for the proper management of equipment and environment, closely following protocol as it applies to animal welfare, including fans/misting system, trailer tarping, and communicating stress load, etc. in sequence. Adjusts holding environment as per standard operating procedure, in order to maintain bird welfare during holding.
  • Provides daily information to the Animal Welfare Manager with respect to results and progress in the area where assigned in the plant.
  • Report issues related to the holding barn maintenance to Animal Welfare Monitor- Team Lead or to the maintenance department.
  • Monitors and records all assigned tasks and completes the relevant documents/records in a timely manner.
  • Performs filing as needed.
  • Attends meetings as needed.
  • Liaises with CFIA inspection staff during the course of CFIA inspection/investigation as requested.
What you will bring
  • Previous work experience working with livestock;
  • Comfortable working outside year round;
  • Comfortable working with animals year round;
  • Must have strong tolerance of a farm environment (scents, animal feces, muck, weather, etc.);
  • Analytical, with problem-identification and problem-solving capabilities;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and effective multi-tasking is essential.
  • Self-starter, well organized, detail oriented and team player.
  • Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer Literacy.
  • Knowledge of the Health of Animals Act and CFIA humane poultry handling procedures;
  • Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), WHMIS, Loss Control, etc
