Therefore, this position requires successful verification of full vaccination against Covid-19 provided prior to the start date, as required by the provincial health mandate.Job Description SummaryWithin the Department of Emergency Medicine in UBC Faculty of Medicine, Digital Emergency Medicine s academic mission is to transform emergency medicine through technology enabled, health professional & patient oriented strategies for excellence in acute & community care.To develop, support and implement initiatives of a multi-faceted research operation. The Associate Lead, Digital Emergency Medicine (DigEM) works to achieve the overall objectives of DigEM by leading the design, implementation and management of (1) research projects and syntheses, (2) training and capacity development initiatives, (3) knowledge translation activities, and (4) human resources planning and recruitment of research staff. Provides leadership on research and investigational work and sets direction to multiple research projects, instructing and advising staff on the use of research techniques and resources. Provides direction on potential funding sources and research partnership opportunities. Prepares proposals and reports; facilitates knowledge exchange and partnership building with academic, community and government audiences. Participates in Executive Committee on DigEM Leadership (ExCeL) decision-making on strategic planning and direction initiatives.Organizational StatusThe Associate Lead, DigEM interacts with all of the partners and collaborators of the unit, including academics, government officials, and funding agencies at the local, provincial and national level. S/he reports directly to the Director and supervises Research Coordinators, Senior Research Associates, and is responsible for supervision of all research staff.The Associate Lead is a member of senior management/leadership team that provides strategic management of DigEM, and operational management and/or administration of DigEM projects and initiatives. The Associate Lead provides authoritative information to senior management/leadership, project leads and staff on human resources, grant and finance management, and related research administrative matters to ensure DigEM complies with university, faculty and external funding agency policies, protocols and practices.Work PerformedProvides leadership and direction for all research projects.Provides leadership and subject matter expertise, sets direction to all research projects within the Unit, and instructs and advises staff on the use of research techniques and resources.Provides leadership on research and investigational work for staff, students, researchers, agencies and community partners as required.Guides overall research agenda and research development for DigEM.Designs, develops and manages strategies, initiatives, and deliverables for research projects.Identifies grant opportunities, assembles grant teams and completes grant applications.Develops and maintains business development/research funding collaborations.Creates and determines dissemination and knowledge translation strategies.Performs research, prepares academic reports and journal articles and translates/communicates research findings for policy makers and communities.Ensures that all research undertaken in communities and organizations respects the ethical expectations of the people, and existing ethical guidelines and principles stipulated by other organizations (e.g. Canada Research Tri-Council).Communicates the Unit s vision for collaboration and knowledge exchange to organizations, government stakeholders and policy makers, and the academic community.Provides leadership and sets direction for the collaborative process of dissemination and utilization of program outcomes.Delivers academic presentations at local, provincial, and national professional events and represents the Unit at team meetings, provincial/federal meetings and roundtables.Reviews manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed journals.Documents all phases of research processes across projects.Effectively communicates expectations in delegating assignments and coaching Research Coordinators and Project Managers to achieve identified goals in an accurate and timely manner.Promotes the work of the research team by targeting opportunities for knowledge exchanges with other stakeholders.Develops and provides stewardship for funding partnerships with collaborating partners from public agencies at the provincial and federal levels.Proactively identifies appropriate national and international research funding opportunities for program of research.Develops and communicates the Unit s vision, mission, and core values.Participates in the design and implementation of local and national knowledge translation activities: e.g., policy maker briefings, public lectures, and research symposia.Designs and develops research documents for policy, public, and academic audiences: e.g., scholarly articles for peer review, PowerPoint presentations for policy audiences and research summaries for general media.Serves as an ambassador for DigEM in interactions with decision-makers, professionals, public and the media.Oversees public relations, communications, and fund raising activities related to the DigEM s program of research.Maintains relationships with key stakeholders in government, academia, regulatory authorities and other agencies.Ensures compliance with project budgets, oversees the creation of accurate financial reports, and produces final reports and manuscripts.Creates and executes strategic human resources plans that are coordinated across research projects.Designs and implements recruitment strategies needed to fulfill human resources requirements for program of research.Performs other related duties as required.Consequence of Error/JudgementThe Associate Lead, DigEM provides leadership to the program of research and is accountable for developing and maintaining relationships across communities, provincial organizations, and government. S/he is accountable for the integrity of the data and the effective and efficient management of the projects. Inaccurate, inappropriate or ineffective communications may affect the image and reputation of the Unit, Department, Faculty, and UBC and have serious implications for strategic partnerships and ongoing funding.Supervision ReceivedThe Associate Lead, DigEM works with considerable latitude. The Director may not be regularly available for questions or direction. Larger projects require significant autonomy in directing the work of the research team. Technical guidance is available through the Director. S/he must be able to identify circumstances that require consultation with appropriate associates & must be able to seek out that consultation in a timely and professional manner.Supervision GivenProvides leadership and motivation to and supervises Research Coordinators and all other research associates.Preferred QualificationsPost-graduate degree in a relevant discipline. Post-graduate degree or equivalent professional designation if responsible for a research project or Undergraduate degree if not responsible for a research project.Post-graduate degree (Doctorate preferred).7 years relevant experience or equivalent combination of education and experience if not responsible for a research project. 5 years experience in a field of specialization or equivalent combination of education and experience if responsible for a research project.Minimum of five years of related research experience, including three years in a management capacity. Training in project management an asset. Experience in executing research projects. Experience in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Experience in research coordination, research administration, communications, project management and budget monitoring. Experience in medical education setting an asset. Supervisory experience required. Computer experience (SPSS, MS Office and Internet) required. Ability to independently identify research goals, develop and implement research projects.Strong leadership skills and a demonstrated ability to take initiative.Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve.Ability to think conceptually.
