Job Description

Grieg Seafood BC operates 22 farms and a hatchery in BC and employs 180 people in coastal communities. GSF BC is licensed to produce 23,400 tonnes of salmon annually to North American and Asian markets.Grieg Seafood BC Ltd., a dynamic and growing company in the Aquaculture industry, is seeking a full-time Deckhand to support our sea site farming operations on the East and West Coasts of Vancouver Island. Reporting to the Fleet Manager, the Deckhand will assist the Fleet Manager and Skipper in supporting the activities of the barge operations. This is a shift-work position (8 days on, 6 days off) and will require occasional overtime work.Key Accountabilities:

  • Assist with removal of all unused nets and ensure all net tag numbers are available for inventory;
  • Assist with installation of all clean nets on site;
  • Assist with mort allocation;
  • Follow all biosecurity procedures pre and post bin transport;
  • Hands-on mechanical maintenance and proper upkeep of barge to ensure vessel is maintained to Transport Canada and Grieg operating standards;
  • Familiarity with maintenance and startup logs for main engines and crane motor;
  • Familiarity with Barge Logbook, safety check list and any and all other company documents;
  • Assist with movement of consumable items, feed and fuel between sites;
  • Assist with moving of compressors on and off sites;
  • Assist Fleet Manager and outside contractors with site anchoring as/when needed;
  • Participate in education programs as required by regulation and made available from time to time or any other courses deemed necessary to maintain safe operation of barge and equipment;
  • Understand and adhere to government regulations, Standard Operating Practices, WorkSafe BC regulations and company biosecurity rules and practices;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Be familiar with the maintenance and upkeep of the barge;
  • Proficient with forklift, power tools and heavy equipment;
  • Must possess strength and mobility to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions, use basic hand and power tools and equipment, lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment;
  • Strong organization and time-management skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Mechanical training or equivalent;
  • Mechanical work experience;
  • Barge experience or equivalent preferred.
