Job Description

Department: Water ServicesEmployee Group: Teamsters Local 31Location: Lake City Operations Centre, BurnabySalary Range/ Wage Rate: PG 15 $1,909.65 - $2,243.15 bi-weeklyOur Water Services Department is seeking a Clerk Typist-Quality Control who will receive samples and enter data, extract, compile and distribute various reports, and act as the first point of contact between the lab and other work groups on issues related to lab operations.You are: Pleasant and cheerful, with excellent inter-personal and customer service skills. You have excellent verbal and written communications skills and multi-task with ease. You are willing to learn and pay attention to details.This role:

  • Types from copy, rough draft, or general instructions divisional reports, records, correspondence, tabulations, memos, documents and other material received from several superiors using word processing equipment to enter, record, recall, revise and print the data and process various lists.
  • Performs complex clerical and secretarial duties for a superior and a superiors subordinates, interviews callers, composes routine correspondence, takes and transcribes dictation including minutes of meetings; prepares, maintains and updates manually and/or using a computer terminal a variety of divisional reports, lists, records, files and other material pertaining to the work; compiles and distributes reports.
  • Enters and updates field data received daily from Metro Vancouver and various municipal work groups using a computer terminal.
  • Provides general information and assistance to a variety of internal and external queries related to Microbiology Laboratory operations.
  • Acts as first point of contact between Microbiology Laboratory and other work groups for issues related to the lab.
  • Performs receptionist tasks as required.
  • Manages lab sample bottle inventories.
  • Performs related work as required.
To be successful, you have:
  • Completion of the 12th school grade supplemented by typing, word processing, commercial and shorthand courses plus considerable related typing, word processing and clerical experience preferably in a laboratory office, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation and arithmetic and of modern business office practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of the rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing the work performed, and of the requirements of those served by the division.
  • Considerable knowledge of word processing and peripheral equipment as related to the work performed.
  • Considerable knowledge of computer and data base systems and procedures applicable to the work performed.
  • Ability to type a variety of materials using word processing equipment to enter, record, recall, revise and print the data and process various lists.
  • Ability to prepare, maintain and update manually and/or using a computer terminal a variety of material pertaining to the work performed.
  • Ability to independently provide typing, word processing, clerical, stenographic and office support services for a moderately-sized laboratory under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts and to handle routine enquiries.
  • Ability to perform receptionist tasks as required.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment in making decisions in accordance with applicable procedures, practices and policies.
  • Skill in the operation of equipment used in the work including word processing and computer terminal equipment.
