Job Description - Indigenous and Community Engagement Specialist, Burnaby or Whitehorse (AUS0006JX) Indigenous and Community Engagement Specialist, Burnaby or Whitehorse - ( AUS0006JX ) We are looking for a highly motivated Indigenous and Community Engagement Specialist who has experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities in engagement programs for assessment and permitting projects. Our ideal candidate would have excellent technical, communication, and interpersonal skills to add value to our talented team. The successful candidate will contribute to Hemmera’s Consultation and Engagement service offering by supporting and leading the design, delivery, and reporting of community, stakeholder and Indigenous engagement activities. If you’re the right person for the job, we are open to discussing you being located in one of our other locations. About the role:

  • Plan and support engagement programs within Indigenous Nations and rural, remote communities across Canada.
  • Manage the coordination, organization, and delivery of socio-cultural research, community consultation activities and primary data collection programs and related community engagement.
  • Work with a team of supporting and senior specialists to contribute to the development of related technical work.
  • Prepare well researched and written deliverables, in accordance with best practices, any preferences and/or protocols identified by respective Indigenous Nations, and/or provincial, territorial and/or federal regulatory requirements.
  • Support Indigenous and socio-cultural related research programs, including baseline reports, effects assessments, cumulative effects assessment and other similar types of deliverables.
  • Act as a specialist supporting work related to Indigenous Knowledge and traditional use on interdisciplinary projects.
  • Conduct qualitative data analysis and interpretation.
  • Degree in humanities, geography, social sciences, communications, or related field of study. Suitable experience may also be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • 2+ years of experience in consultation and engagement activities, preferably in the context of licensing and permitting of major projects.
  • 2+ years of demonstrated socio-cultural experience, working with or for Indigenous Nations.
  • Familiarity and demonstrated experience with engagement best practices, UNDRIP, FPIC and other related enhancements in related policy and/or regulatory advancements.
  • 2+ years of increasing responsibility in the planning and execution of community engagement activities such as open houses, workshops, focus groups, and development of strategic engagement materials such as letters, posters, handouts, surveys and feedback forms.
  • Experience facilitating meeting and/or engagement activities dealing with complex subject matter with diverse audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent research, analysis and technical writing skills.
  • Knowledgeable of participatory action research methods and approaches.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the International Association of Public Participation (IAP2) spectrum will be an asset but not required
  • Strong project management skills, ability to multi-task, work under tight timelines
  • Ability to produce quality deliverables that stand up to public scrutiny.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willing to travel, as required.
