Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Group Riskamp; Resilience, the Program Manager, Safety Programs drives the development, implementation, and ongoing support of regulated and non-regulated safety and quality programs in the areas of ground handling, cargo, food, dangerous goods, corporate safety training, strategic safety programs, and safety promotion. The Program Manager, Safety Programs supports and leads the activities of a team of safety professionals to deliver on the following:

  • Create, implement, and support safety programs that are tailored to the requirements of each business unit and drive the prevention of safety incidents.
  • Coordinate the distribution of work within the team to ensure balanced portfolios throughout; leveraging the strengths of individual team members to maximize impact.
  • Own the Risk Assessment program from a Group perspective, working to align the Air Operator’s Certificates (AOCs) and Approved Maintenance Organization (AMO) in the approach to assessment of risk and ensuring that the program meets corporate risk objectives.
  • Continue to develop and refine the Group Predictive Risk Index, which leverages the Risk Assessment program, and ensure the two programs are complementary.
  • Provide oversight and ensure the promotion and training of corporate Dangerous Goods policies and procedures. Work on an ongoing basis to elevate the level of support provided to the business.
  • Oversee the promotion of safety within the WestJet Group, ensuring a robust promotion plan is in place that addresses key areas of safety concern and engages employees and contractors in all areas of the business.
  • Facilitate the development, review, and maintenance of all safety related training across the WestJet Group, ensuring it remains current and addresses all regulatory requirements.
  • Continue the development and maintenance of the Group Safety Manual, expanding the scope to provide a single source of information for airlines across the Group. Utilize the Group Safety Manual and related initiatives to drive alignment of non-regulated activities and directly address IATA Standards and Recommended Practices for the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) program, primarily in the area of Organization and Management System (ORG) requirements.
Experience/education required:
  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.), or equivalent experience
  • 3-6 years’ experience in operational safety support and program development
  • Certificate in a safety related discipline is preferred
  • Excellent writing skills with a demonstrated ability to write quickly and succinctly, often within tight timelines
  • Strong computer skills with a particular focus on MS Office
  • Ability to foster and manage effective relationships with various operational departments
  • Strong familiarity with the Safety Management System and associated regulatory requirements around structure and policies
  • Understanding of change management
  • Experience in building and maintaining corporate policy and procedure manuals
  • Understanding of operational and safety risks and the mitigation of risk
