Job Description

Position Summary: As a member of the Parks team, the Parks Worker, Gardening & Turf is responsible for providing seasonal assistance in the upkeep and maintenance of City parks, green spaces and playgrounds.Key Accountabilities: Provides seasonal labour in the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of:

  • Park maintenance: maintains cleanliness of the park, litter picking; emptying garbage bins; weeding, rototilling and mulching beds; mowing, trimming and repairing turf; blowing leaves and gravel; planting and pruning shrubs, perennials and annuals
  • including picking litter and weeds, emptying garbage bins, performs general gardening duties, including preparation of topsoil.
  • Equipment upkeep: maintains cleanliness and upkeep of equipment; assists with upkeep of equipment and vehicles on a regular basis; assists with pre- and post-inspections; reports broken or faulty equipment to the Parks Coordinator and/or Parks Crew Lead.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives, participate in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits, ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System, reports and assists in the analysis of near misses or incidents.

  • Grade 12 or GED preferred.
  • Experience operating small motorized equipment such as lawnmowers, rototillers and trimmers considered an asset.
Required Certificates and/or Documentation:
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence and Drive’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the City.
  • Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the City.
Expected Skills and Attributes:
  • Working knowledge of parks maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to operate appropriate equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic analytical and creative thinking skills; ability to read and understand pesticide labels, ability to solve problems, make decisions, negotiate and deal effectively with people. Strong work ethic and highly motivated; ability to work in fast paced environment and respond to action requests in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Working Conditions:
  • Regular outdoor working conditions.
  • Regular, physically demanding work, including standing, walking and crouching for extended periods of time.
  • Personal Protective Equipment required.
