Job Description

POSITION PURPOSEReporting to the Supervisor, COVID Communication & Outreach, is responsible for translating complex disease and health specific information into plain messaging to varied audiences; understanding communication requirements of varied audiences and adapts messages accordingly; writing divisional reports (e.g. program evaluations, annual reports, reports to Council); drafting divisional policies and procedures in collaboration with the management team; and serving as the key point of contact for projects involving technical writing or the creation of new/revision of existing documents.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with various levels of staff to compile complex program information and produce letters, memos, briefing notes, abstracts, publications, reports, disease fact sheets, etc. for communication to varying internal and external stakeholders, from professionals within the health care field to the public.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to draft business cases, project submissions and divisional reports (e.g. annual reports, program evaluations, reports to Council).
  • Drafts and adapts messages to best communicate with the intended audience.
  • Ensures communication is concise, accurate, accessible and timely in order to meet internal and external stakeholders’ information needs.
  • Understands the needs of the Division relating to the specific issues/projects undertaken in order to draft submissions, project documents and reports.
  • In consultation with the management team, drafts policies and procedures to support program requirements in a timely manner
  • Conducts appropriate research/inquiry to gauge communication needs of intended audiences.
  • Responds to inquiries and resolves concerns, as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, in accordance with Division, Branch and Department objectives.
  • May occasionally be required to respond to emergency situations outside of normal business hours, as related to the Departmental Emergency Plan.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Successful completion of a University Degree in Communications and/or English or approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in technical writing, public relations, copywriting and plain language writing.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in effective writing skills to translate complex communication into plain language that is clear to ensure the readers understand quickly.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer focus, communication, collaboration and personal ownership.
  • Demonstration of Departmental competencies, including flexibility and adaptability, accountability, strategic thinking, creativity and collaboration.
  • Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications.
  • Demonstration of competence to communicate using social media.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations in a timely and efficient manner, as required.
  • Ability to work outside regular business hours, as required.
