We are responsible for the policies, legislation, and regulations that guide Road Safety in our province. We operate in a proactive regulatory environment. You will spend time with our service partners at Service Nova Scotia and Internal Services (SNS-IS), becoming familiar with the documents, policies, and processes that guide our industry such as drivers’ licenses, vehicle permits, and registration documents. You will also learn to administer written tests, vision tests and screening. You will have in-car training (including backseat observation and evaluation) along with training in driver intervention (including driver counseling, re-examines, interviews, and restorations). Further training includes commercial and motorcycle training courses.This is a very structured training program with frequent check-ins and testing. We also provide access to educational workshops and information sessions along the way, ensuring you are up to date on all.Primary AccountabilitiesAs the Driver Examiner, you play a critical role in supporting road safety in your province and the results of your work are very far reaching; impacting driver, passenger, and pedestrian ability to return home safely.You will conduct up to 12 road tests a day ranging from learners, upgrades and motorcycle examinations to driver interventions. In your role, you maintain a high level of standards when determining driver ability and competency in the safe operation of a motor vehicle. You examine, re-examine, license and evaluate new and experienced drivers in accordance with the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations. You assess driver behavior and determine the best course of action for moving forward. You conduct client interviews on topics such as Drivers License records history and make subsequent recommendations to the Deputy Registrar of Motor Vehicles. Given the sensitivity of information dealt with daily, this position requires you to maintain a high degree of neutrality and confidentiality.Qualifications and ExperienceA keen interest in highway safety is critical. At a minimum, you have high school completion and five (5) years of experience with evaluation techniques, escalated client engagements, and customer service; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.You have computer skills and are experienced with various software applications in an office environment, including the ability to perform data entry.As the ideal candidate you are professional in your work; fair, but firm; decisive and empathetic. Your ability to make split second decisions is instrumental in your role. Occasionally you will be faced with challenging and sensitive situations and your ability to communicate effectively, show empathy, maintain composure and harmonize client relations are critical.
