Community DetailsSince its creation 7 years ago, Nova Scotia Brotherhood (NSB) has served thousands of Black men in Halifax by offering culturally safe and appropriate supports. Black wellness navigators & community liaisons use a multifaceted approach to deliver care & provide advocacy. Working in tandem with these community members is a Black family medical doctor who provides assessment, care and referrals to appropriate resources. The Nova Scotia Sisterhood (NSS) will mirror the NSB. Most recently, NSB was pivotal in providing innovation in care to the Black Nova Scotian community during COVID-19, when there was large resistance to COVID testing. They helped bridge the gap for Public Health, going door-to-door in the Black communities of the surrounding areas of Lake Loon/Cherry Brook & the Prestons to assist with setting up testing sites in these communities. We are seeking a community minded physician to join the NSS and continue unique and rewarding work in Halifax Regional Municipality’s (HRM) African Nova Scotian (ANS) communities and throughout the province. The NSB team has also gone beyond the borders of HRM to the best of their ability to deliver public education across the province for Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) communities to great success. To combat isolation, they hosted weekly community Zoom calls with culturally appropriate speakers, such as a Black psychiatrist to discuss various health topics, including those directly related to COVID & mental health supports. The NSS is looking for an innovative physician to support this work with ANS women. The team concentrates their efforts on the social determinants of health (SDOH) and fully appreciates the impact of SDOH on the health of the Black communities that they serve. Building relationships is the key to their work and it is through these community connections that they have achieved success-to-date.Physicians in Nova Scotia provide fulfilling patient care which embraces family life, professional development and community involvement. Thats what makes practicing medicine in Nova Scotia unique. Physicians are increasingly attracted to practices that offer team-based care to their patients and allow them to consult with their peers. The size and scale of Nova Scotia allows for better connections across the health care system. Your practice of medicine and your life is richer here. Nova Scotia is more than medicine.Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) is committed to being a workforce that is free of discrimination, values diversity and is representative, at all job levels, of the people we serve. Our priority groups are Aboriginal People, African Nova Scotians, Persons with Disabilities and Recent Immigrants. Members of these groups are welcome to apply and self-identify if they wish to be considered under our Employment Equity policy.Quick Apply
