The Opportunity:WSP is currently seeking a Field Technician to join our growing Earth & Environment business in Dartmouth. You will join our Ecology & EIA team and will be integral in providing field-based support for our ongoing environmental projects, ranging from stand-alone environmental permitting applications (e.g., watercourse and wetland alterations) to Environmental Assessments for more complex multi-disciplinary projects.The position involves working in a close-knit team of dedicated professionals and you will be responsible for carrying out field assessment and data collection exercises and presenting the findings in reports. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and delivering:
  • Terrestrial wildlife and habitat surveys
  • Botanical inventories
  • Avifaunal surveys
  • Fish and fish habitat surveys
  • Wetland surveys
  • Species at Risk (SAR) surveys
  • Water and sediment sampling and in situ monitoring
  • Benthic invertebrate and fish sampling

  • Assist project managers/leads with the planning and execution of site-specific permitting, environmental assessment, and monitoring programs in Atlantic Canada.
  • Independently lead fieldwork programs under the direction of project managers and coordinators.
  • Collection and documentation of pertinent field data according to industry standards and WSP protocols and procedures.
  • Communicate with clients, sub-contractors, laboratories, government agencies, and partners regarding project tasks.
  • Participation in, and compliance with, company Health and Safety policies and programs.
  • Undertake data analysis and QAQC, and assist with the preparation of technical reports.
What youll bring to WSP ...
  • You enjoy fieldwork and like to work autonomously – think the opposite of your standard 9-5 desk job!
  • A technical diploma or degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology or a related discipline along with at least four (4) years of relevant experience conducting environmental field work and reporting.
  • A strong understanding of provincial, and regional legislation and policies related to aquatic and terrestrial environments, including permitting procedures.
  • Specialist ecological knowledge, including species identification (e.g., birds, bats, lichens, plants, fish).
  • Experience with ArcGIS and use of digital apps (e.g., Survey 123, Collector) to collect ecological data in the field.
  • Being a certified Wetland Delineator, WESP-AC user and/or in possession of an electrofishing license would be a great asset!
  • Strong awareness of health and safety issues, a safety-conscious attitude, and excellent team-working and communication skills.
  • Must possess a valid Class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions.
  • Access to a reliable vehicle, with appropriate registration and insurance.
  • Experience using off-road vehicles (AWDs, ATVs etc.) and boat-handling experience.
  • Willingness to travel, including to remote locations and outside standard office hours, including overnight stays.
