Requisition ID: 117029Opportunity Type: PermanentEstimated Annual Salary: 300,000 - 350,000Type of Remuneration: AFP - Academic Funding PlanSite Visit & Reallocation Allowance Programs:Department of Health & Wellness Incentives:Other Incentives:About the OpportunityThe Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University is recruiting for two forensic psychiatrists at the East Coast Forensic Psychiatric Hospital: clinical director and forensic psychiatrist.The East Coast Forensic Psychiatric Hospital (ECFH), in Dartmouth Nova Scotia, is a key component of the provincial Mental Health and Addictions program within Nova Scotia Health. It is also an academic hospital affiliated with the Dalhousie Department of Psychiatry. The ECFH embraces a co-leadership model, and the clinical director works closely with the administrative director of the ECFH in all aspects of operation.The services supplied by the hospital encompass 60 inpatient rehabilitation beds, 24 beds for Forensic Assessment and Correction Treatment (FACT unit), two bungalows on the premises allowing semi-independent accommodations for seven clients, and a community program for those on conditional discharge. The ECFH is mandated to provide court ordered assessments and rehabilitation services for NCR acquitees and unfit accused in Nova Scotia and has a negotiated agreement with Prince Edward Island to conduct court ordered assessments for courts in that province. This makes the hospital the largest forensic psychiatric facility in the Atlantic region and the largest east of Montreal.The hospital is also responsible for the delivery of Correctional Health services for individuals on remand or serving custodial sentences. Hospitalists and psychiatrists deliver care via in person assessment and virtual care to several correctional facilities across the province.ResponsibilitiesCLINICAL DIRECTORForensically trained psychiatrist with at least 5 years of experience working within a forensic mental health service; demonstrated leadership and management skills; a progressive clinical and academic vision for the forensic mental health service; ability to lead and work within a multidisciplinary team; solid understanding of the legal framework within which forensic mental health services are delivered; able to effectively collaborate with key stakeholders and work flexibly in response to changing organizational requirements. Candidates with subspecialty certification in Forensic Psychiatry from the RCPSC preferred. Reporting to Head/Chief Department of Psychiatry. - Oversee and provide clinical leadership to the ECFH’s inter-disciplinary clinical teams. - Ensure the quality of expert evidence provided to the court, review boards and tribunals. - Manage the psychiatry physician workforce at ECFH. - Act as clinical spokesperson, including responding to media requests. - Work with the program leader to develop, plan, and implement programs. - Advance academic excellence through promotion of research and education within ECFH.FORENSIC PSYCHIATRISTFellowship in Psychiatry and certification in Forensic Psychiatry from the RCPSC or equivalent is preferred. Experience in Forensic Psychiatry will also be considered. Reporting to the ECFH Clinical Director. - Provide services to units at the East Coast Forensic Hospital including Court Ordered Assessments, rehabilitation programs, acute and long-term psychiatric treatment and correctional psychiatry. Forensic psychiatrists employ evidence based includes pharmacological & psychosocial treatment interventions. - Consult and lead as part of a multi-disciplinary team that involves psychologists, social workers, case coordinators, occupational therapists, recreational therapists and nursing. - Provide submissions for the Criminal Code Review Board and assessment of patient readiness for levels of privileges and care. - Take part in a psychiatry on-call schedule within the program unless specifically exempted. - Didactic and clinical education and supervision of residents and clinical clerks. - Research interests are encouraged and supported. - Membership in clinical and academic committees.Expected HoursFull TimeOn call requirementQualificationsRemuneration: The positions are funded through an Academic Funding Plan. This covers direct and indirect care, virtual care, clinical administration, care coordination, etc. Psychiatric call is remunerated as per Department of Psychiatry funding mechanism.
