Job Description

Job PostingOur Bridging the Gap program offers paid internships for new grads interested in a career in municipal public service. The program provides training, development, and on-the-job experience for candidates that have graduated within the last 24 months.Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for an Expression of Interest (EOI) the temporary, full time (up to five months) position of GIS Asset Specialist Intern in Parks & Recreation. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify on their electronic application.The Parks service area is committed to supporting Regional Council priorities through capital construction, operation and maintenance services for all parks, open spaces, sports fields, courts, playgrounds, green spaces, and splash pads. HRM maintains a large number of parks and outdoor facilities, and it continues to increase the amount annually. Currently, HRM owns 922 parks, 325 sports fields/ ballfields and 407 playgrounds which exceeds other benchmarked municipalities. There is now an opportunity to categorize and record current condition of park assets through the development of a right sizing and capital replacement model considering asset and lifecycle management principles as a key deliverable in Parks and Recreation.Reporting to the Manager, Asset Control & Service Delivery, the GIS Asset Specialist Intern will collaborate with other members of the Parks and Recreation team to develop a more efficient and systematic way to record all data in the repair, replacement and maintenance of assets within our parks and open spaces. This is in a response to a desire to take a more deliberate and strategic approach to park asset and lifecycle management and adopting a quality over quantity approach.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with staff to support the completion of the inventory of assets owned and/or maintained by Parks;
  • Collaborate with staff to input current park assets and conditions of park assets into Enterprise Asset Management Asset Registry database;
  • Assist the Parks division in developing park asset data maintenance guidelines;
  • Assist with research, data collection and analysis to assess parkland priorities;
  • Assist in refining existing and developing new policies, standards, procedures to help guide decision making and prioritization for park development, lifecycle renewal and rationalization of the portfolio of municipal parks.
QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:
  • Recent graduate with a two-year diploma or degree in Geomatics from a recognized institution;
  • To be eligible for the internship, candidates must have graduated within the last 24 months from a recognized or legally authorized university or community college;
  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada at time of application and maintain this status for the duration of 18-month term;
  • We value non-traditional experience and candidates are encouraged to outline in their application any student leadership, volunteering, extra-curricular, or community-based experience they possess;
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who have demonstrated an interest in public policy or government administration.
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability and expert skills with a variety of Esri products, such as ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Desktop, and ArcGIS Pro;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of using, maintaining and managing spatial data.
