Job Description

The Nova Scotia Union of Public and Private Employees is looking to hire additional business agents for our team and inviting applications for the following, permanent full-time positions (2):Labour Union Business Agent/Organizer ABOUT US We are a small labour union with big ideas and plans. NSUPE has 8 locals representing an estimated 1800 members across Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, including the workers of Halifax Public Libraries, Halifax Regional Centre forEducation’s custodians and maintenance workers, the Canadian Blood Services blood collection workers in PEI, and the inside workers at Halifax RegionalMunicipality among others. NSUPE currently employs two business agents and an office administrator and is supported by the lawyers of Stockton Maxwell & Elliott.Each NSUPE Local has its own elected executive and Locals are overseen by the elected members of NSUPE’s Executive. Reporting directly to the Executive Council, business agents are responsible for providing advice and representing members on a wide variety of workplace matters, including assisting in all aspects of employee/employer relations, advancing the strategic objectives and policies of the union, and promoting unionism among non-unionized workers.THE POSITION This team-oriented position requires an individual who possesses a high degree of initiative, empathy, flexibility, organizational awareness, and respect for diversity in addition to exceptional verbal and written communication skills. The business agent must have a service-based orientation, strong planning and organizational skills, experience in resolving disputes and possess the ability to work independently and with sound judgement. The successful candidate must be able to prioritize their workload to manage multiple deadlines and concurrent priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, diplomacy, and decorum.The home location of this position is the NSUPE office located at 103 Thorne Ave.,Dartmouth NS. Please note this office is located on the 2nd floor and accessible only by stairs. Occasional travel to members’ workplaces across Halifax RegionalMunicipality, Digby, Nova Scotia, and PEI are required.Additional information about our organization can be found at nsupe.caDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides information, guidance, and advice to members regarding the interpretation of collective agreements, relevant legislation, disciplinary matters, complaints, and employment benefits such as leaves, compensation rates, insurance, and pensions. -Prepares, processes, and monitors grievances according to mandated timelines, and keeps all relevant parties appropriately informed
  • Provides analysis of workplace issues, determines available options, recommends and/or takes appropriate action
  • Represents, negotiates, and advocates on behalf of individual members and the union to resolve workplace issues.
  • Attends meetings as requested, including those of Local Executives, Council Committee, Executive Council, general meetings, and bi-annual Convention. Serves as a facilitator and staff liaison for various committees as required or assigned.
  • Prepares correspondence, petitions, lobbying materials, and research briefs for employers, government, and other external parties on subject or policy matters
  • Provides critical analysis and strategic advice to the Executive Council regarding provincial and federal politics, government policies, and legislation as it relates to workers and the trade union movement.
  • Ensures the Executive Council is informed of important labour-related news across multiple locations.
  • Provides advice concerning development, application, and adherence to NSUPE policies. May provide or assist in providing labour relations education to the union leadership and members.
  • In addition, the business agent assists or may assist with:
  • Communicating information relevant to internal union matters and external labour movement issues.
  • Develop proposals and positions for contract negotiations and may participate in collective bargaining.
  • Preparing newsletters and bulletins for local memberships.
  • Maintaining productive ongoing union-management relations.
  • Recruiting new members and liaising with other labour organizations.
  • Responding to inquiries from employees interested in unionizing their workplace
  • Identifying and reaching out to workplaces that could benefit from organizing
  • Additional duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS -University degree in Labour Relations, Industrial Relations, Human Resources, or a related discipline.-Minimum of three (3) years experience in labour relations handling workplace complaints, interpreting collective agreements, grievance handling, and dispute resolution.-Additional consideration will be given to applicants who have hands-on knowledge, education, and experience relevant to the position-Knowledge or ability to acquire knowledge of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island employment legislation, including the Trade Union Act, Labour Standards Code,Human Rights Act, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.-Proficient in the use of computers, including internet research and related software(e.g., Word, Windows, database software, etc.)-Must be eligible to work in CanadaWORKING CONDITIONSEmployment is conditional on a criminal records check. Valid Class 5 driver’slicense and a personal vehicle in good working condition are required for this position.Additional hours or time outside of the normal business hours could be required if operational needs change.
