Aviva Trial Lawyers, the in-house legal firm at Aviva Insurance Company of Canada, is growing. We are currently seeking a senior litigation assistant to join our team in our Dartmouth office. As a litigation assistant you will be responsible for supporting one lawyer in the handling of insurance defence (tort) litigation matters. This is a hybrid position where, depending on your level of experience, you will be involved in various paralegal and legal assistant tasks as well as the day-to-day file management.Come join us!What you’ll do:General management of tort litigation practice, including:Drafting and preparation of correspondence and legal documents, including motion documents, pleadings, affidavits of records, pre-trial/mediation memos, document briefs, etc.Working with and managing litigation files in an electronic paperless fashion.Ensuring all appropriate pleadings and documents are filed in accordance with the Rules of Court.Compilation of books of authorities/factumsPerforming basic legal research, possibly including quantum and liability assessments, depending on experience and interestPreparing and following up with requests for productions and undertakingsSummarizing discovery notes, transcripts, economic loss and medical reportsArranging or coordination of investigations/surveillance, independent medical examinations and retention of other specialists, including preparing various instruction letters to investigatorsFiling; keeping our lawyer's calendar updated; and updating internal databaseRequisitioning chequesMaintaining file organizationBooking travel; including flights, cars and hotels as needed on behalf of our counselEnsure integrity of information in Legal case management systemWork in partnership between counsel, external parties, and claims operationsWhat you’ll bring:Minimum of 5+ years of legal assistant and law clerk experience in an insurance defence or personal injury litigation environmentPost-secondary accreditation for legal assistant or law clerk, or equivalent experience preferredExcellent digital literacy including experience with MS Word and OutlookProficient in the Rules of Court and Court formsCustomer-service oriented with superb communication skillsExcellent organizational skillsAttention to detail with a desire to take initiativeAble to work autonomously and as part of a teamDemonstrated work ethic and good sense of humourAbility to work in an electronic reduced-paper environmentWhat you’ll getCompelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.Outstanding Career Development opportunities.We’ll support your professional development education.Aviva Canada has an accommodation process in place to provide accommodations for employees with disabilities.
