Visit us today and check out www.novascotia.com to see why more people from across the globe are moving here.ResponsibilitiesReporting to the Manager, Health Protection, Science and Systems Performance, the Pharmacy Practice Assistant (PPA) works in the Provincial Biological Depot and supports the Provincial Immunization Coordinator, Public Health Nurses, biodepot secretaries and other public health employees across NSH. The PPA will maintain a consulting and professional connection with the Pharmacy Manager and Pharmacist in Central Zone. The PPA participates in the provision of safe, competent, and ethical practice, ensuring the goals of the Publicly Funded Immunization Program are prioritized and meet the needs of the population.The PPA must be adaptable to a variety of work locations based current work assignments and emergency response activities. Work locations may include schools, long term care facilities, community clinics, and a variety of other workspaces. The PPA demonstrates flexibility to work across teams and develops professional relationships with multidisciplinary health care providers and stakeholders. The hours of work can vary and may include evenings and weekends, as needed to respond to the needs of the community. Participation in an after-hours on call rotation to arrange access to emergency vaccines required for communicable disease case and contact management is required in addition to some travel to support zone needs across Nova Scotia.The PPA is responsible for monitoring and reporting on publicly funded vaccine supply, utilization and wastage achieved through adhering to established contracts for vaccine ordering and ensuring vaccine distribution follows the NS Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule. The PPA utilizes Panorama, and/or other electronic databases to assess vaccine inventory, process vaccine orders, and complete vaccine adverse storage condition documentation.Through implementation provincial standards for vaccine preparation, handling, and dispensing/distribution the PPA ensures safe storage, handling and transport of vaccine and biological agents from the provincial biologics depot to the end user. The PPA provides support and education to community stakeholders such as physicians, pharmacies, long term care and other health care providers on publicly funded vaccines, vaccine supply management and proper vaccine storage and handling.Participation in quality programs is also a responsibility of this position. These functions may be self-determined, assigned by management, or requested by other members of Public Health.Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited pharmacy technician/technology program
  • One year of experience as a hospital pharmacy technician/ pharmacy practice assistant, or recent experience working in a retail pharmacy is considered is required
  • Valid Nova Scotia Drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Current CPR certification is required
  • Ability to work flexible hours to ensure vaccine courier deliveries are coordinated and managed to meet service requirements
Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of inventory management systems, in particular SAP applications, and Panorama is an asset
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical practices to ensure quality of the product throughout inventory supply chain, i.e. cold chain
  • Knowledge of the Public Health Agency of Canada, National Vaccine Storage and Handling Guidelines for Immunization Providers, as well as Health Canada Guidelines for Temperature Control of Drug Products during Storage and Transportation and Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy Information Systems, other patient information systems, as well as various software programs
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and participation in an after-hours on call rotation to provide access to urgent vaccine supply
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to speak, read, and follow written and oral instruction
  • Excellent ability to read and understand complex documents such as vaccine purchasing contracts, provincial guidance documents and standards.
  • Excellent assessment skills and attention to detail is required to review cold chain breaches and implement required follow up actions.
