Requisition ID: 141873Opportunity Type: Long Term AssignmentEstimated Annual Salary: $78,000 - $104kAbout This OpportunityThe Emergency Department at the Dartmouth General Hospital is seeking a certified Physician Assistant to join the interdisciplinary team involved in the provision of clinical care to patients and their families, engage in quality and safety processes, and participate in trainee education and academic activities. Guided by a series of medical directives, the successful applicant will be assigned a Primary Supervising Physician and provide clinical services under the direct supervision of Emergency Department attending physicians. This position will offer the PA an opportunity to work to full scope of practice.The position will report to the Health Services Manager Emergency Department with functional reporting relationship to the Primary Supervising Physician.Dartmouth General Hospital is an acute care hospital with 24-hour emergency, inpatient and outpatient, medical, surgical, and critical care that has been operating since 1976. Located in Dartmouth, it serves approximately 300,000 people each year from Dartmouth and Halifax Regional Municipality.DGH has 122 inpatient beds and 8 intensive care unit beds. The facility offers extensive outpatient services, outreach programs, and medical diagnostics and also has an extensive surgical program, including:general surgeryurologygynecologyear nose and throatorthopedicsplastic surgeryoral maxillofacialophthalmologyvasculardentistryServices:anesthesiologycancer and supportive carerespiratory servicesemergency medicinediagnostic imaging (general radiography, mammography, CT scanning)laboratory servicesrenal dialysispharmacymedical and surgical unitrehabilitation servicesphysiotherapygynecologyoccupational therapyvolunteer servicesgeneral surgeryplastic surgeryotolaryngology (ENT: ear nose and throat)nutrition and diabetic counsellingResponsibilitiesDuties to be fulfilled by the Physician Assistant include:

  • Obtain health history as appropriate, including patient demographics, chief complaint, history of the present illness or injury, past medical, surgical, family and psychosocial history, medications, allergies and systems review.
  • Conduct comprehensive and focused physical assessments and interpret findings. This includes assessment of vital signs, inspection, palpation, and examination of all major body systems. In addition, the PA performs psychological, ob-gyn, neonatal, paediatric and geriatric assessments.
  • Utilize primary and secondary assessment results to formulate a differential diagnosis and determine if further clinical investigation is required.
  • Order and complete preliminary interpretation of necessary diagnostic tests, which may include, but are not limited to, haematology, microbiology, chemistry, serology, urinalysis, blood gas, ECG, peak flow and plain film x-ray.
  • Perform the following diagnostic procedures: ECG, Peak expiratory flow tests, Slit lamp examination (including fluorescein dye and intraocular pressure measurement), Visual acuity, Pap smear.
  • Collect blood samples (arterial and venous), minor surgical samples, body secretions and body fluids (semen, sputum, wound drainage, and urine).
  • Formulate a treatment and management plan based on assessment and investigation results, availability of services and special needs of patient.
  • Implement effective treatment plans that include preventive and therapeutic interventions, demonstrating appropriate procedural skills, as determined by the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants Scope of Practice and National Competency Profile, and the supervising physician.
  • Collaborate with and seek appropriate consultation from the supervising physician and other health professionals involved in the patient’s care to work as physician extender.

Qualifications
  • Successful completion of a recognized accredited Physician Assistant educational program in Canada or the United States of America
  • Certification through the Physician Assistant’s Certification Council (PACC) or National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Membership with the Canadian Association of the Physician Assistants
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work in an inter-professional healthcare environment
  • Must have recent well rounded clinical experience and preferably been exposed to Emergency Medicine in the workplace or as part of clinical training
  • written and spoken competence in English is required
  • all applicants must have a current PALS Certification (Paediatric Advanced Life Support) Certification
  • all applicants must have a current ATLS Certification (Advanced Trauma Life Support) Certification
  • all applicants must have a current ACLS Certification (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) Certification
