Your Opportunity:We are seeking a Full Time Clinical Assistant in the Department of Surgery to join our group of specialists at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital located in Grande Prairie, Alberta. The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital is a 250-bed acute care facility with a busy emergency department, ICU, NICU and specialty services in OBGYN, orthopedic surgery, general surgery, ophthalmology, ENT, urology, palliative care, pediatrics, and psychiatry as well as radiation therapy services. There are a total of six operating rooms daily, with the capacity to expand to 10 operating rooms, after-hours call, acute pain service and pre-admission clinics. The City of Grande Prairie is an economically strong and culturally diverse large urban centre, with a population of 75,820 and catchment area population of about 250,000. Grande Prairie provides a wide choice of recreation, education, shopping and entertainment opportunities. Grande Prairie is a full-service urban centre with a Multiplex Recreational Centre, a Community College, numerous cultural events, alpine & cross-country skiing, mountain biking, camping and more. The Grande Prairie Regional Airport connects the region to the Calgary and Edmonton international airports with daily scheduled flights provided by Air Canada and WestJet. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.Description:The Clinical Assistant for Surgical Services will work under the guidance, and report to, the Specialists Surgeons to provide clinical and technical assistance in the Emergency Room, Outpatient department, Surgical Units and consultations on other units. In this position you will: Have knowledge and interest in the management of surgery patients in the different surgical specialities Document consultations, patient interactions and procedures in the patient medical record Participate on clinical committees, research and special projects. Consult with patients in the Emergency Room and Outpatient departments and discuss this with the appropriate surgeon for management planning. Prepare patients for surgery and help to optimize patients for their journey through the surgical pathway. Do daily rounding on all surgical patients on the surgical unit and interact with the multidisciplinary team to optimize patient care. Respond to acute complications, medical needs and changes in status of surgical in-patients. Diagnose untreated conditions, manage and order patients specific special investigations as needed on in-patients. Discuss patients daily with the Most Responsible Physician (Surgeon) and work collaboratively with all members of the care team. Ensure that patient flow is managed appropriately and that discharges are done in a timely and efficient manner. Provide post op care instructions, post operative prescriptions and arrange for transfers to outlying hospitals where appropriate. Help to maintain the patient’s care pathway post-surgery and post discharge by making appropriate follow-up appointments, manage Outpatient Therapy plan management and wound care management. Assess and discuss management plan of patients with the Surgeon responsible. Work schedule: Days and afterhours shifts – evenings and weekends.

Use critical thinking skills.Additional Required Qualifications:Your experience: This is an alternate physician provider role in which the successful candidate will work with a limited medical license issued from the College of Physician and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Minimum of 3 years clinical experience. Registration with Alberta Clinical and Surgical Assistant Program (ACSAP).
