Job Description

About veritree: veritree is an award-winning climate tech start-up based in Vancouver. Launched in 2021, our technology measures and verifies the impact of restoration projects from the ground-up; thereby elevating the credibility of those global restoration projects and unlocking investment in nature. We #39;re on our way to embedding nature into 100,000 businesses and planting 1 billion verified trees by 2030.About the role:veritree is seeking a Data Scientist to oversee and integrate impact data streams, such as models created by researchers, geospatial and sensor data as well as optimizing veritree platform automation processes. This individual will establish our strategy for integrating external data and models, as well as identifying and filling data gaps to ensure alignment with impact indicators and reporting. The successful candidate will lead the creation of processes and develop strategies to optimize impact data flow and modeling. This role #39;s key outcomes within 2024 are:

  1. Standardization: Create an efficient data pipeline to ensure standardized approaches for ETL with external research teams and internal processes
  2. Reporting: Create automated reporting systems for the veritree platform, ingesting data on carbon sequestered, biodiversity enhancement, area restored, survivability and impacts on communities.
  3. Fine-Tuning: Fine tune the veritree Restoration Plan (which automates restoration opportunities, reference and control sites and identifies baseline indicators). The current system is a Minimum Viable Product which is needed to identify restoration areas, reference sites, control sites and scaling capacity forecasting.
  4. Integration: Create standardized procedures to integrate external models (e.g., for carbon) into the data architecture and assess the gaps and opportunities for optimization and scaling.
  5. Modeling: Assess data streams and content being generated from sensors, photographs, drones and satellites and identify areas of opportunity for optimization, automation and further areas of enquiry.
Please note preference will be given to candidates based in Vancouver, BC. However, we will also consider remote candidates who are legally eligible to work in Canada or the US. Job responsibilities:
  • You will work with external teams to create standard data processes and pipelines, while anticipating potential challenges and proactively implementing solutions to ensure scalability.
  • You will automate calculations and provide dynamic reporting and forecasting.
  • You will create a system that enables multiple reporting templates to be activated
  • You will assess the veritree platform and automation capacity and identify areas to optimize algorithms.
  • You will create a prioritization schedule for fine-tuning existing algorithms in the platform.
  • You will develop and implement scalable strategies to integrate spatial and ground-based data, while assessing gaps and opportunities for optimization.
  • You will design, train, evaluate, validate and implement machine learning models.
  • You will leverage a broad stack of technologies — Python, PyTorch, HuggingFace and more — to reveal the insights hidden within structured and unstructured data.
RequirementsProfessional Requirements
  • MS or PhD (preferred) in Mathematics, Statistics, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field.
  • 3+ years industry experience working on data science and machine learning projects
  • Deep understanding and practical experience in several of the following areas: machine learning, statistics, optimization and forecasting
  • Remote sensing expertise
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to apply algorithms, which may include data profiling, clustering, anomaly detection, and predictive modeling methodologies
  • Extensive experience applying theoretical models in an applied environment
  • Significant peer reviewed scientific contributions in Data Science, Analytics, Statistics, Optimization or related field.
  • Ability to uphold a high bar for science development across multiple domains
Personal Strengths
  • Data savvy: You have the skills to research, retrieve, combine, and analyze data from a variety of sources and structures. You know understanding the data is often the key to great data science.
  • Technical: You’re comfortable with open-source languages and are passionate about developing further. You have hands-on experience developing data science solutions using open-source tools and cloud computing platforms.
  • Innovative: You continually research and evaluate emerging technologies. You stay current on published state-of-the-art methods, technologies, and applications and seek out opportunities to apply them.
  • Self-Driven: You thrive on bringing definition to big, undefined problems. You love asking questions and pushing hard to find answers. You’re not afraid to share a new idea.
  • A leader: You challenge conventional thinking and work with stakeholders to identify and improve the status quo. You are highly collaborative and have the ability to influence and lead.
