Job Description

Mid-/Senior-Level Network Systems EngineerWe are seeking a Network/Systems Engineer to be a part of a world-class capabilities related to the energy science and technology associated with the ORNL and DOE mission. Selection will be based on qualifications, relevant experience, skills, and education. This position is within the ORNL National Security Sciences Directorate and will support projects at the Grid Research Integration and Deployment Center (GRID-C), to perform research and development (R amp;D) and operations support for national security applications. Scientists and engineers at this level are expected to possess technical skill sets within network engineering and will be required to be innovative and creative in their specific technical field of expertise. The successful candidate will be responsible for applying their experience and knowledge to support scientific applications in network/systems engineering thru developing operational and research solutions for advanced/precision timing and sensing.Purpose: The Network/Systems Engineer hired for this position will be expected to provide both operational and research expertise that strategically advances science and technology consistent with ORNL #39;s aspiration to be the world #39;s premier R amp;D institution and advance ORNL #39;s science culture. They will be expected to design, develop, and engineer advanced timing and associated research networks in support of improvements, modifications, and upgrades to the national electrical grid systems. All work will require diligent documentation and the generation of research publications. Major Duties/Responsibilities:

    This position reports to the Principal Investigator of the Center for Alternate Synchronization and Timing and interacts with personnel at all levels within GRID-C.Conduct design, deployment, maintenance, and direct support of various network applications in the prospective backing of several scientific projects. Apply direct, hands-on experience in Network Technology.Conduct research exploration and apply techniques that can detect, predict, and classify electrical disturbances, as well as optimizing such techniques for real-world, real-time applications that will assist existing electric utilities #39; protective infrastructure.Contribute to the development and management of communication networks on scientific projects and work closely with staff, utilities, and research stakeholders to meet their network requirements, address connectivity issues, and assist in the achievement of overall scientific goals.Basic Qualifications:
      Requires a 10+ years of relevant work experience in current networking engineering administration, management, and operations. The primary responsibility for this position is network configuration, design, operations, and troubleshooting.Demonstrated network engineering experience shall support scientific applications in network engineering. Utilize experience with network development and operations methodologies; specifically regarding timing and synchronization, GNSS/GPS, Small Cells, LTE FDD/TDD, NFV, SDN, IoT NB, LTE M, SONET and SDH networks.Can design, engineer, and oversee installation of network equipment to ensure installation is within industry standards. Implementation of device configurations as assigned (such as Juniper, Arista and/or Cisco switches and routers).Providing trouble tracking, coordination, notification, escalation, and documentation to resolve events/issues, efficiently minimizing customer impact.Lead the design and installation of new network devices.Analyze triggered alerts (utilizing tools such as Wireshark, SNMP management) and heighten as needed while providing trouble tracking, coordination, notification, and documentation to resolve events/issues, efficiently minimizing customer impact.Preferred Qualifications:
        Excellent written and oral communication skills. Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the wider laboratory.Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment. Set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines; and, adapt to ever changing needs. Although, the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance is preferred, all qualified applicants will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
          Prior experience developing or contributing to large, complex network projects.Familiar with Network Timing Protocol (NTP) and Precision Timing Protocol (PTP).Experience with DOE, DOD, ICD, and FISMA regulatory requirements, are desirable.Familiarity with TEMPEST certification, as well as a level communications security (COMSEC) experience, are desirable.Understanding of business development and product development.Understanding of VSAT Systems and Two-Way Time Transfer over SATCOM.
