Job Description

In aerospace, transportation, defence, security and space, our architects design innovative solutions that make our tomorrow #39;s possible.Position SummaryThis is a hybrid position located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.Thales Canada is looking for a Docking and Engineering Specification Writer (DESW-E) to support its Non-Combatant In-Service Support Programs for the Royal Canadian Navy.The Thales Docking and Engineering Specification Writer will work with the Thales LCMMamp; Engineering and Service Delivery Teams to provide project management and technical support to various Royal Canadian Navy #39;s Non-Combatant Platforms. This includes but not limited to the preparation of docking specifications and other technical support activities for the LCMMamp; Engineering Team.Key Areas of ResponsibilityThe DESW-E will report to the Engineering Services Manager and support the development of docking engineering specifications for AOPV Class, based on industry/RCN accepted practices and available technical documentation. This may include but not limited to:

  • Preparation, and review of docking specifications and docking facility work packages, technical proposals and scopes of work;
  • Applying lessons learned from previous dockings to support baseline documentation updates; and
  • Defining guidelines for hull repair specifications.
Additional tasks to support the AJISS Engineering program may include but is not limited to:
  • Reviewing Engineering, Certification Management and other Processes and identify areas of improvement.
  • Prepare documented work scopes suitable for solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEM #39;s, manufacturers, suppliers, repair and testing facilities, or specialist service providers.
  • Preparing and reviewing technical documentation and supporting baseline documentation updates; and
  • Providing technical input into problems associated with equipment or system malfunction, including failure analysis and solution development.
Minimum Requirements
  • 3-year technical program diploma in a marine technical field, or Degree in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated experience with the planning, management and execution of ship dockings and dry dock refits.
  • Minimum of five years maritime experience in Ship Repair, Ship Building or Ship Operations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years #39; experience in project management of ship repair and engineering change projects.
  • Familiar with conducting weight and stability calculations and associated tools, and lightship surveys.
  • Previous experience with Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard;
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets;
  • Language: French (Desirable as a first or second language, with English second or first)
Physical Demands
  • Predominantly office work but will be required to work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships.
  • Maybe required to undertake inspections in machinery spaces of Naval ships involving bending and twisting.
Regulatory Compliance Requirements
  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR.
  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as you will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level.
