Job Description

As a global-leading health and well-being provider - encompassing physical, mental and financial health - TELUS Health is improving health outcomes for consumers, patients, healthcare professionals, employers and employees.Managed by a legal team partner and working with the legal consulting team on providing support to consultants and clients on pension plan and other retirement and savings vehicles design, documentation, governance, reorganizations and wind ups and other types of transactions, both in Canada and the Caribbean. Internal and external speaking, training, writing and participating on committees.Working with the legal consulting team on the following:

  • Guidance and support to consultants, clients and pension administrators on legislative, case law and other industry developments
  • Compliance of client pension plans with pension standards and Income Tax Act requirements
  • Reports, presentations, and plan documentation for existing and prospective clients
  • All aspects of plan wind-ups and administration of pension plans as a result of employer insolvency, reorganization or de-risking
  • Strategic design and implementation of special projects - for example, plan mergers, wind-ups, reviews and audits of plan governance, drafting of governance documentation, pension committee training and surplus withdrawal applications
  • Support for pension governance and investment management, including ESG factors
  • Development of innovative new products in retirement savings and financial well-being
  • Updating the formerly Morneau Shepell Handbook of Canadian Pension and Benefit Plans and other TELUS Health publications
  • Working on international mandates in the Caribbean and elsewhere in pension law, insurance law and compensation consulting
  • Communicating with regulatory authorities
  • Managing multiple client files and projects
  • Monitoring industry topics and trends
  • Participating in industry organizations (e.g., OBA, CPBI, ACPM)
  • Delegation and peer review, where appropriate
Success requires the following core qualifications and skills:
  • Law degree and called to the Bar of Ontario or another jurisdiction in Canada
  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience in pension law (experience in insolvency, employment, labour, and/or tax law would be an asset)
  • A positive attitude, with strong leadership and team building skills
  • Excellent analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex information
  • Exceptional writing and research skills; detail oriented
  • Exceptional client focus with strong professional acumen
  • Excellent communication, project management and presentation skills
  • Highly organized, with an ability to take initiative and be independent
  • French language skills would be a definite advantage
  • Ability to delegate to and mentor junior colleagues
