Job Description

arc programs is currently accepting applications for a School-Based Support Worker to work out of Rutland Secondary School in Kelowna BC.The School-Based Support Worker will work in partnership with School District 23 to provide community and school-based support services to youth attending Rutland Secondary School.The School-Based Support Worker will provide support to individuals who are experiencing mental, emotional, and behavioral health concerns, and require extra support in the school setting.The Student Support Worker will work closely with the Connection Room Teacher and School Counsellor to provide services that focus on supporting the youth to learn new skills and coping strategies to experience more success in the school setting.Services will be flexible and delivered through individual or group support in the Connections room and in the community depending on the specific needs of the individual youth.Hours / Schedule

  • Part-Time, 10-month position, from Mid-September to Mid-June following the school calendar.
  • 15 hours per-week (2 days a week, hours of work are during school hours).
  • Distribution of hours will be determined in consultation with the School District.
  • Services will take place between 8:30 / 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
ResponsibilitiesThe specific responsibilities of this position include:
  • Demonstrating engagement skills (empathic, genuine, concrete, respect).
  • Preparing for sessions with children, and uses sessional time to pursue the goals identified in collaboration with the children, school-based teams and parents/caregivers.
  • Working collaboratively with support people identified by the children’s family including other family members, physicians, pediatricians, and other community resources.
  • Providing individual and group supportive counselling that is appropriate for the developmental needs of each youth, and builds on a range of skills that would help improve their overall functioning.
  • Working closely with the Connections Teacher and School Counsellor to provide flexible services that focus on supporting the youth with their mental health by providing:
  • Psychoeducation
  • Opportunities to gain experience and practice new coping skills (distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness)
  • In school support toward independence (i.e., Gradual exposure)
  • Connection to community supports and resources that support well- being.
  • Collaboration with parents/caregivers
  • Using programs, curriculum and resources determined by the Connections staff that meet the specific needs of the students attending the program.
  • Providing services that promote cultural and gender safety for all children served.
  • Provide outreach to students who are not currently attending in-class.
  • Provide Family Support to students by taking student(s) to appointments, connecting to community agencies.
  • Support active living initiatives by taking students for walks/hikes etc.
  • Develop and mentor positive life skills to students.
QualificationsCandidates for this position will possess sufficient training and experience to perform all responsibilities of the job description.The qualifications of the position are consistent with those of a practitioner in the child and youth care field, consisting of a minimum of one of the following:
  • BA - CYC and related experience.
  • BSW and related experience.
  • BA and 2 years related experience.
  • CYC Diploma or Certificate and 3 years directly related experience.
