Job Description

HOUSING SUPPORT WORKERJOB DESCRIPTION- Annapolis ValleyThe Housing Programs are a part of the Portal Youth Outreach Association for youth designed to improve the immediate and long-term social, educational/vocational, economic and health outcomes for vulnerable youth between the ages of 16 and 24 years, who are facing multiple challenges with limited supports. Housing Support Worker- Logistics and Rentals will sustain the partnerships in the community in preventing and responding to youth who are homeless or at risk of being homeless. The Housing Support Worker would philosophically and functionally model a belief and lifestyle in keeping with the vision and values and core outcomes of the Portal Youth Outreach Association:

  • Youth have an improved ability to meet their basic needs including housing
  • Youth have improved relationships with their family, and /or friends, and / or others
  • Youth have an improved connection to their community
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Initiating trouble shooting and problem solving within the service providers and the network of Supportive Living Programs, Supported Apartments and Host Homes.
  • Organize and maintain the orientation for SLP respite workers and volunteers.
  • Oversee the management of the Trust fund program ensuring that host homes, landlords, and youth receive the monies needed for rent, food, incidentals, transportation, and basic medical expenses.
  • Networking and building partnerships with programs, services, and respected leaders in the Community.
  • Acting as an advocate in partnership with the Youth Outreach and Edge Program for youth in supportive housing in accessing supports and services and in their development.
  • Provide administrative/property management supports for the Supportive Housing Programs.
  • Provide administrative/property management supports for the:
  • Collection of rent and bill payments for utilities, contractors, vendors
  • Administrative tasks to secure rent subsidies/supplements
  • Coordinate the workers for the moves (in and out)
  • Applications for shelter enhancement as needed
  • Identify property needs given the high acuity, with damage & security deposits.
  • Manage the eviction prevention and poverty reduction funds.
  • Oversees a maintenance plan and asset protection for SLP homes.
  • Documenting work, including recording progress and supportive work with Youth as well as statistical information for the project. Including: a program evaluation at the 6- & 12-month point and make observations and suggestions for improvement and note best practices in a report to the Director.
  • Participating in regular, weekly supervision and informal debriefs
  • Participating in ongoing training and professional development
  • Recommend financial supports such as damage deposits, rental arrears, emergency food, moving expenses, and supplies and seek out any other financial supports within community or government which are appropriate to the need.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in social sciences (Community Development, Psychology, Human Services, Social Services, etc.).
  • The best candidate will have recent and substantial experience in the direct delivery of housing programs to youth at risk, direct experience in being able to manage difficult situations with clients, must be able to work under stressful conditions with limited supervision and have mobility to travel.
  • The candidate must have experience and training in rent collection, bill payments and basic bookkeeping skills.
  • The candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and be able and willing to sign the community guidelines and conduct.
  • Experience in working with youth in a community-based setting; personal life experiences are a definite asset.
  • A grasp on their own personal story and experience, having worked through their own trauma, addictions or emotional challenges as it related to the work with vulnerable youth
  • Knowledge of youth/family/community resources, programs and services within the community and within Nova Scotia
  • Knowledge and understanding of provincial and federal policies that apply and are relevant to Youth
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience in working with culturally and socially diverse Youth
  • Demonstration of experience in working from a strengths-based and relationship-based perspective
  • Demonstrates a passion for working with Youth, specifically in supporting Youth who may be facing multiple and complex challenges
  • Willingness, flexibility to work evening and weekend hours.
  • The candidate must have demonstrated leadership and administrative skills in volunteer environments and practical experience in developing programs.
The Housing Support Worker- Logistics and Rentals will be responsible to the Housing Programs Coordinator. The candidate must be able to submit a clear police records check, a clear report from the Child Abuse Registry Check, and be willing to have references checked, and be willing to adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.Job Types: Full-time, PermanentSalary: From $38,800.00 per yearBenefits:
