Job Description

Immigration Program NavigatorFull Time, Contract Position (37.5 hours per week) until March 31, 2023 with possibility of contract renewal The Valley Regional Enterprise Network (Valley REN) is the regional economic development organization for the Annapolis Valley Region. The Valley REN carries out the economic development priorities for its members, which currently include Glooscap First Nation, the Municipality of the County of Kings, West Hants Regional Municipality, and the Towns of Berwick, Kentville, and Middleton. Funding for the Valley REN is provided by its members and is matched by the Province of Nova Scotia to support economic development on a regional level. Together with the Province, our partners provide oversight to the Valley REN Board of Directors, which is led by the regional business community._ Our Mission: The Valley Regional Enterprise Network’s mission is to be the catalyst for a thriving, sustainable and inclusive regional economy in the Annapolis Valley. Serving the Annapolis Valley region, we are uniquely positioned to objectively address the economic and business development needs of the region as a whole without being confined to municipal boundaries. We are the “boots on the ground,” helping to link the private sector and public organizations around common objectives for regional economic progress. _Job Purpose: Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Immigration Program Navigator will conduct outreach and promote all provincial immigration programs to Annapolis Valley employers, navigate and refer employers to immigration programs and work with existing immigration support organizations in a coordinated approach in the Annapolis Valley to ensure immigrants to the region feel welcomed and supported. This position will support employers in the region to enable the hiring and retention of newcomers in the Annapolis Valley.Primary Duties and Responsibilities This position is primarily responsible for 3 key activities:Promotion and Outreach throughout the Annapolis Valley:

  • Conduct outreach and promote all provincial immigration programs to all Annapolis Valley employers, but with a particular focus on those employers with high demand occupations
  • Help employers understand how to be “immigration ready”
  • Work with workforce development partners throughout the region to raise awareness of all provincial immigration programs
Navigation to Supports:
  • Navigate and refer employers to Provincial immigration programs
  • Navigate and refer immigrants, newcomers and employers to the ecosystem of workforce supports in the region
  • Navigate employers to programming related to welcoming workplaces for immigrants and newcomers and diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace
Support Network:
  • Work with key economic development partners and workforce support partners to identify synergies
  • Work with partner organizations to create and support cultural events that celebrate immigrants and newcomers in the region
  • Catalogue regional assets available to newcomers
  • Work with partners to develop a regional Welcoming Workplaces Toolkit
General Duties:
  • Collaborate with Valley REN staff, community partners, funders, etc. to increase employer engagement in immigration as a recruitment and retention tool
  • Participate in the planning, hosting and organizing of events and information sessions to promote programs and services to employers and job seekers, including international students
  • Network with community partners
  • Maintain confidentiality and manage a project budget effectively
  • Prepare written progress reports and presentations for relevant partners
  • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skilled project manager and relationship builder who is committed to the business and economic growth of the Annapolis Valley.
  • Must be a self-starter; someone that takes initiative and has the ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision and also collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to effectively manage a budget and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong time management, planning, networking and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Political awareness and sensitivity.
  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude and proven interpersonal skills.
  • Must be tactful and able to exercise sound judgement and discretion when working and interacting with community leaders, diverse community groups and all levels of government.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Solution focused, ability to understand, assess, and analyze issues to find solutions.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and virtual meeting platforms, such as MS Teams and Zoom.
  • Experience in coordinating, managing, and/or evaluating programs.
  • Experience planning and hosting events.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Immigration System, Provincial Immigration Programs and
Annapolis Valley business community would be an asset.Working Environment:
  • Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, in an office environment (office is located in Kentville).
  • Flexibility in working hours is required as some work will happen outside of regular hours.
  • Frequent travel throughout the region may be required to fulfill the duties of this role, therefore continuous access to reliable transportation to areas within West Hants, Kings and Annapolis Counties, with the possibility of other parts of the Province is a requirement and responsibility of the employee.
