Job Description

Native Council of Nova Scotia CHIP FacilitatorA Native Advocacy Representative Organization representing, promoting, and advancing the self-governing institutions and services of the off-reserve Aboriginal/Mikmaq of Nova Scotia, "Going Forward To A Better Future." To further the objective of improving the social, cultural, educational and employment situation of the rural, urban, off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples of Nova Scotia.POSITION TITLE: CHIP FACILITATORLOCATION: Native Council of Nova Scotia, Liverpool, NSEMPLOYMENT ROLE: The Child Help Initiative Program of the Native Council of Nova Scotia is a long-term program which is designed to create, through community support, programs, and partnerships; a brighter future for Aboriginal children ages 0-6 and their parent(s), by helping them with a range of information and support. Reporting directly to the Social Programs Manager, the CHIP Facilitator is responsible for the continued development, organization, coordination, and day to day operation of the CHIP program for the region. The Chip Facilitator will provide communications and coordination with all program co-workers, parent groups and other like agencies that support the goal of the programs. The CHIP Facilitator will provide community field support and guidance to the Parent Group, parents, and children within the context of the goals of the Child Help Initiative Program. The CHIP Facilitator will assist and empower the Community Parent Groups to improve the health and well-being of their children.KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education or three years of Early Childhood Education or related experience;
  • excellent communication skills;
  • social service experience in working with communalities and “at risk” families;
  • strong organizational skills a must;
  • be familiar with Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal history, culture and with the off-reserve Mi’kmaq/Aboriginal population;
  • be willing to take training to meet needs and standards of the position;
  • Must be able to provide a recent criminal record check and child abuse registry check;
  • Encourages child and parent support training, workshops, programming and activities within community parent groups and the zone or region;
  • Maintains detailed files on clients of the program, the parent groups of that region, noting specific concerns and barriers, referrals and inter active measures undertaken to address the needs of the specific client and/or family;
  • Provides information on the CHIP Program through formal presentation or community meetings and/or agency meetings;
  • Provides input on budget planning annually for the CHIP programs;
  • Assists with input on the Parent Group handbook and monthly newsletters to the community;
  • Provides program updates for insertion to the NCNS newsletter, Taliaq Mi’kma’ki;
  • Keeps informed about developments in child development, healthy families, etc.;.
  • Utmost professional confidentiality is mandatory.
  • Must be able to provide a recent criminal record check and child abuse registry check;
