Job Description

NATIVE COUNCIL OF NOVA SCOTIAIndigenous Housing First OfficerNATIVE COUNCIL OF NOVA SCOTIAA Native Advocacy Representative Organization representing, promoting, and advancing the self-governing institutions and services of the off-reserve Aboriginal/Mikmaq of Nova Scotia, "Going Forward To A Better Future." To further the objective of improving the social, cultural, educational and employment situation of the rural, urban, off-reserve Aboriginal Peoples of Nova Scotia.POSITION TITLE: Indigenous Housing First OfficerLOCATION SETTING: Native Council of Nova Scotia, Liverpool, NSEMPLOYMENT ROLE:Reporting directly to the NCNS Social Programs Manager, the incumbent is responsible to provide and assist rural off-reserve Indigenous clients who are homeless, at risk of being homeless or are unstable in housing. The incumbent will then work together with the client to ensure that the supports are put in place to best stabilize and help the client. This is done through community partnership, programs, and services, as well as established NCNS programs and services. It is expected that the Housing First Officer work in collaboration to ensure that the client receives the supports needed at the right moment.KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of the rural, urban and off-reserve Indigenous population and issues is a must.
  • Case Management experience or experience working with a caseload;
  • Community resource awareness;
  • Above average writing, organizational and communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to individuals whose value systems and behaviors may differ from what would be expected;
  • Possess a strong desire to help others, patience and understanding will be a highly valued characteristic;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation;
  • Must be able to provide a recent criminal record check and child abuse registry check;
  • Computer literate, including but not limited to the use and application of software used to develop professional presentations;
  • Relevant education, training and work experience in a similar role will be considered an asset.
