Job Summary:The rewards are as plentiful as the challenges for the Settlement Worker in Schools. You will be joining an established Agency that is guided by faith to care for and bring hope to people in need with humility, compassion and respect. With more than 50 years of service delivery, Catholic Social Services is one of the largest multi-function social services agencies in Canada, with more than 1600 staff and 2000 volunteers delivering 130+ programs through Central and Northern Alberta.The Settlement Worker in Schools facilitates the settlement and integration of newly arrived families. Through needs assessments and systematic out-reach to newcomer families, Settlement Workers in Schools provide cross-cultural education, information about schools and schooling, and information and referrals to community agencies and support programs. The primary focus of settlement workers in schools is to facilitate integration and settlement of newcomer families through systematic outreach to newly arrived families, to provide them with the information about available services, needs assessment, cross-cultural education and referral.The successful candidate must have flexible availability for hours outside of a standard work day.Skills and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of Canadian social systems: settlement and immigration, health, legal, education, financial, social, housing, and employment
  • Proven problem-solving and advocacy skills with the ability to visualize and deliver creative solutions
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills in English, including the ability to create communication appropriate for the audience (individual and group-based).
  • Facilitation skills: able to make presentations and facilitate workshops.
  • Networking skills and resourcefulness: ability to connect with community organizations
  • Computer and office skills: competence in various computer applications, record services and update electronic case notes and files data entry into various databases.
  • Collaborative skills: willingness to work as a team member, consulting and sharing information with colleagues and community partners, and contributing to the development and evaluation of programs.
  • Ability to multitask, establish priorities, take initiative and work effectively independently
  • Exhibit high standard of professional boundaries
  • Excellent planning and organization skills
  • High level of professionalism, confidentiality and diplomacy
Education and Qualifications:
  • Degree/Diploma or Certificate in Human Services (or equivalent)
  • 2-3 years’ professional experience working with community organizations and partnerships
  • Vulnerable Sector Check form local RCMP or Police detachment
  • Child Intervention Record Check
  • Clear and current drivers abstract
  • A vehicle and valid class 5 drivers license
  • Proof of vehicle insurance showing $2 million liability coverage
