Job Description

We value and encourage different perspectives and we have the courage to do the right thing, even when it’s hard.This position will assist in the installation, inspection and servicing of gas utility systems that transport natural gas upstream of the meter set. Gas utility systems include gas distribution systems under various levels of pressure, gas mains and services, pressure controllers and regulators, and gas meter and measuring. Within the scope of the job, responsible to ensure safety, reliability and efficiency in accordance with company, provincial and municipal codes and procedures. All work and driving will result in a safe condition for the employee, co-workers and the public.This is a training position and a progression step to Distribution Operator with various duties assumed gradually, following successful completion of the required training and courses including successful completion of the Distribution Operator exam, and demonstrating the required skills, abilities and competencies on the job to perform the job duties.   • Install, construct, inspect, test, operate and service natural gas utility systems as directed.
  • Operate and maintain regulating, measuring and odorization facilities and equipment.
  • Respond to, or assist in response, to emergency calls and ensure proper emergency procedures are followed.
  • Investigate, or assist in the investigation of, gas leaks or odors, gas fires and explosions.
  • Locate underground gas systems and conduct routine surveys of gas mains and distribution lines to detect and locate escaping gas.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of cathodic protection to prevent corrosion in steel and aluminum pipes.
  • Safely operate a variety of construction equipment, small tools and instruments.
  • Complete turn-ons and turn-offs and light up procedures as directed.
  • Prepare pipe using tools such as pipe cutters, pipe threading machines and pipe vices.
  • May be required to assist in testing, calibration and repairs to equipment.
  • Perform quality assurance and inspections on work performed by seasonals, contractors and other departments as directed.
  • Ensure that equipment is in good working order and request repairs or replacement where required.
  • Promote good working relations with external and internal contacts.
  • Read meters as required.
  • Report encroachments or built overs.
  • May be required to perform basic stock and shipping and receiving duties.
  • Identify and document any incidence of gas theft from company and customer facilities.
  • Provide related training to others as required, and when deemed competent.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 or G.E.D.
  • Related experience in areas related to the upstream gas utility system is desirable.
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety regulations is desirable.
  • Knowledge of company standards, policies and procedures pertaining to the operation and maintenance, construction and pressure control of the gas distribution system is desirable.
  • Familiarity with various regulatory codes governing the natural gas industry is desirable.
  • Must display good verbal and written communication skills, decision making skills, and strong work ethics, and be able to maintain and promote good working relationships and excellent customer service.
  • Must have a valid Alberta Class ‘5’ driver’s license and may be required to obtain a higher class or certification as needed.
  • Ability to interpret plans, working drawings and material specification is desirable.
  • Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and dexterity in the use of tools and equipment.
  • Must meet company stand-by requirements and be available for stand-by when scheduled.
  • May be called out to assist in emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • This position is a Safety-Sensitive position and has additional pre-employment requirements.
Residency Requirements: Employees must reside within
  • The Lloydminster service territory (agency), and
  • 30 minutes from their place of residence to the Lloydminster office
