To learn more about our mission, values, commitment to EDI, and the difference Heartamp; Stroke makes in the lives of people in Canada at every age, please visit our website The opportunity (Please note this is a 12-month contract and hybrid working role located in Manitoba.)  Reporting to Director, Health Policyamp; Systems (MB), the Specialist, Health Policy and Engagement is an experienced and energetic team player who contributes to the implementation of Mission initiatives in Manitoba and the Western Region, in alignment with Heartamp; Stroke organizational priorities, with a key focus on: 

  • Supporting advocacy and government relations activities 
  • Engaging with people with lived experience (PWLE)  
  • Health education and awareness initiatives 
  •  stakeholder engagement with partner organizations  
  •  supporting Indigenous health and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives   
Accomplishing these goals requires ongoing collaboration with the Director of Health Policy and Systems, external and internal partners across the country, and involves representing Heartamp; Stroke in occasional media opportunities.  How you will make an impact every day Strategic development of advocacy campaigns and plans 
  • Support H amp;S policy efforts, including participation in municipal, provincial, and federal government advocacy meetings to advance H amp;S mission priorities.
  • Provide support to the tobacco/vape coalition in alignment with Heartamp; Stroke’s identified role.
  • Craft strong communication materials including reports, submissions and other key advocacy communication pieces.
Build and strengthen provincial engagement of People with Lived Experience (PWLE) and caregivers. 
  • Collaborate with national engagement team to explore and implement strategies that provide meaningful experiences for PWLE and caregivers. 
  • Engage with PWLE in local and national opportunities and maintain year-round meaningful connection. 
  • Track engagement with PWLE through existing database and prioritize stewardship and regular connection. 
Engage with health professional stakeholders to advance H amp;S advocacy and systems priority areas. 
  • Participate in meaningful local collaboratives and meetings aligned with H amp;S priority areas including but not limited to tobacco/vape, heart failure, cardiac/stroke rehab, CHD, prevention and community support programs. 
  • Identify local and regional needs related to H amp;S goals and priorities. 
  • Maintain year-round connect and relationships with key stakeholder partners.
Provide leadership and support to public awareness and education efforts in the area of promote health, save lives and enhance recovery 
  • Support FAST campaign initiatives and reporting. 
  • Prepare and provide prevention-related media for the western region, working collaboratively with H amp;S Communications Advisor (West). 
Support and engage vulnerable populations, particularly Indigenous individuals and engage with national diversity, equity and inclusion work. 
  • Support advancement of Indigenous Health Strategy including participation in aligned initiatives within Manitoba. 
  • Advance FAST newcomer outreach in Manitoba aligned with national strategy. 
Who we need Education
  • University degree in health-related field 
Experience
  • A minimum of 3-4 years’ experience in health policy and health systems related field 
  • experience working with people with lived experience in heart disease/stroke   
  • Experience and comfort using a health equity lens to advocate for policy and systems change 
  • Experience and comfort using a health equity lens to advocate for policy and systems change
Skills
  • Working knowledge of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health and disease conditions 
  • Strong written and oral communication skills 
  • Strong facilitation skills 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Comfort and ability working in a cross-functional team 
  • A high degree of independence, creativity, initiative, and accountability 
  • Strong computer skills and comfort working in a virtual environment
