Job Description

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM ASSISTANT - MERRITTIn School District No. 58 (Nicola-Similkameen), we recognize that we learn, teach and work on the ancestral, traditional and unceded territories of the NleeKepmx and Syilx people, and we acknowledge our Métis communities and their contributions to the Aboriginal ways of being, knowing and doing.Our Strategic Plan has a “Success for ALL Learners” focus, supported by a dedicated staff, engaged stakeholders and partners who share a genuine commitment to the district. The district offers rich programming to just over 2075 students, 48% of whom are Indigenous. We are proud of our work towards Truth and Reconciliation.The district serves the two communities of Merritt and Princeton, six First Nations Bands, the Métis and the Conayt Friendship Society. The mountains, lakes and valleys within the district make it a natural setting for fabulous, year-round outdoor activities. We offer a warm small-town atmosphere where relationships are fundamental to our success.At this time, we invite applications for the position of: After School Program AssistantOur After School Program operates throughout the school year in bright, clean and well-maintained school classrooms. This includes access to school facilities, including classroom space, gyms, and outside play structures. The Assistant to the After School Program will work part-time, up to twenty (20) hours per week, Monday to Friday on a flexible schedule.Responsibilities:

  • Support a welcoming, inclusive, respectful environment
  • Support students in arts or sports activities
  • Responsible for being on site for all program sessions
  • Assisting participants to take part in the planned activities
  • Provide positive behaviour support
  • Well versed in being able to re-direct behavior or talk children through challenges
  • Be able to work as a member of a team
  • Assist Coordinator, presenter, or team lead as required
  • Be able to work from 2:30-5:00 x 3 afternoons per week
  • Be able to communicate with families as needed
  • Support transitioning students between school and after school program
  • Responsible for safety and following policies and procedures
Qualifications and Attributes:
  • A clear Criminal Record Review, completed prior to hiring
  • Must be skilled at building connections and establishing trust with young people
