It fuels our innovation and connects us closer to the community we serve.Job DescriptionInternal applicants who apply on or before June 15, 2022, will receive preference.We have an opportunity for a Driver (All Trucks) to join the City of Merritts Public Works Team in an 18-month term position.Drivers (All Trucks) provide essential services by upkeeping and maintaining the Citys public infrastructure, including roads, utilities, sanitation, solid waste, airport, parks and the cemetery.In this position, you will drive and operate various machinery and equipment, including but not limited to the commercial and residential garbage trucks, dump trucks for both summer and winter operations, snow plowing and sanding as well as the crane truck and water/ brine truck. In addition, you will carry out preventative and general maintenance on all related equipment.As part of a small team, you will also carry out other related duties, such as physical labour work, litter pickup, snow shovelling, weeding, line trimming, raking, as assigned and provide coverage for other roles within the Public Works department as required.This work is safety-sensitive and physically demanding in all weather conditions; outstanding customer service and teamwork skills, along with a safety-first mindset, are essential.Qualifications

  • Mechanical aptitude and 2 years or more operating large commercial vehicles (standard and automatic) such as garbage trucks, dump trucks, snowplows, publicly, in all weather conditions.
  • Experience working in utilities and road maintenance, preferably in a municipal Public Works environment.
  • Safety training in all related areas such as confined space, first aid and traffic control or willingness to obtain.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.
  • A Class 3 Drivers’ Licence with a safe and acceptable driving history.
  • Air brake endorsement.
  • Teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Customer-service orientation, conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to work safely, in compliance with safety standards and safe work procedures.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (speaking, listening, writing etc.).
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate good judgement.
  • Ability to execute tasks efficiently, manage time, organize work, and prioritize with minimal supervision.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.

This position is within the bargaining unit, and the rate of pay is $31.44 (2022 rates).
