We’re looking for a Seasonal Outside Worker (Labourer) to join the Public Works team.Job DescriptionThe City of Merritt is seeking a Seasonal Outside Worker to join our Public Works team. Seasonal Outside Workers take pride in contributing to the success of the team. They work in all weather conditions to maintain Merritt’s public grounds so that they can be enjoyed by our City’s residents and visitors during the spring and summer seasons.In this role, you will assist in maintaining the City parks, landscapes, sidewalks, streets, roads, the cemetery, compost, airport, lawn bowling and ball diamonds. With your customer-service orientation, your duties may include landscaping, planting bulbs, shrubs, weeding gardens, pruning, raking and helping the team to repair potholes, concrete and bricks. You will run small equipment such as mowers, weedwhackers, skid steers and you may drive light duty trucks or other equipment related to the work.QualificationsThe ability to work in a safe and efficient manner.Knowledge and experience in the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in related maintenance and in the proper and safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools and other equipment related to the work.Good interpersonal and communication skills to deal tactfully, courteously and accurately with the public and Municipal staff, work effectively within a team.Enthusiastic, positive attitude and customer-service orientation.Ability to analyze and troubleshoot.Good judgement to perform duties as assigned and work with minimal supervision.Ability to keep simple records of the work performed.Sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination to perform heavy manual outdoor work in all weather conditions.The successful applicant will be asked to provide proof of a valid Class 5 (or lower) BC Driver’s license, a safe and responsible driving abstract and a clear Police Information Check.Additional InformationThis is a full-time Seasonal position (approximately April to October) with hours of work outlined in the Collective Agreement between the City of Merritt and CUPE Local 900.
