Discover how you can make a difference in the lives of individuals, families and communities around the world.The AVP, AOS Application Operations, is responsible for the support, service management and stability of the Canadian Production Application Portfolio.Accountable for Continuous Improvement and Operational Excellence in all areas of Operational Service Delivery, you will also be responsible in ensuring that Production Applications meet the approved compliance, recovery, and Business Continuity plans.Business Units served include Individual, Investment, Distribution, Group Benefit and Retirement Services covering channels such as Call Center, Mobile, and Web on Cloud, Distributed, and Mainframe platforms. Application Security is also included in the mandate of this role.Reporting to the Vice-President, Application Operations and Services, the AVP, AOS Application Operations is a trusted partner in a portfolio which include over 2400 applications, 250 employees, 10 Directors and a $30M operational budget.In the role, you will manage the Total Cost of Ownership for supported applications and be required to report on Service, Budget and TCO. You will also help in the planning and execution all infrastructure, tool and vendor software related to supported applications.As Operational Lead, you will ensure compliance to the Change and Problem Management processes established at Sun Life. You will be an active member of the AOS Leadership team, and a key contributor to tactical and strategic direction and vision for the broad Production Application Portfolio.The ideal candidate must have a proven track record of building high performance teams across organizational boundaries and successfully achieving a broad set of IT deliverables within tight deadlines and budgets. Experience in developing strong and productive relationships with partners at all levels of the organization as well working closely with senior IT and business leaders is essential.What will you do:

  • Lead the Application Support Teams to be high-performing, low-cost and efficient
  • Client Relationship management to promote a service-oriented culture that acts in the best interest of the business with strong ties to the Application Delivery Teams.
  • Partner with the AVP, AOS Practice, to ensure the level of resourcing (numbers and skill set) meets business needs, balancing permanent and contingent staffing (temp, contractor, onshore/offshore/3rd party) while also ensuring succession planning is in place, including coaching and mentoring.
  • Manage the Budget Demand and Supply processes to deliver baseline services across all Application Delivery Teams cost-efficiently and within the overall AOS baseline budget.
  • Participate in Tactical and Strategic direction and vision for the overall Application Operations Team
  • Adapt to the complex needs and creative solutions required for our constantly changing and fast-paced development cycle.
  • Ensure the Stability and Availability of all applications meets business needs through quick restoration of service, implementing corrections to address root cause, and ensuring due diligence is applied to all changes.
  • Overall stewardship and delivery of application systems and technology architecture of applications to enable business units to meet current and future goals.
  • Prime point of contact (system owner) for all technology, compliance, security, and governance issues related to the applications in the portfolio.
  • Prime point of contact (partnership) with all DBTS Teams to represent Production Applications in all matters.
  • Lead or Champion resolution and restoration when outages and/or issues are encountered.
  • Participate, and possibly lead or sponsor, cross-Corporate/Canadian technology programs and initiatives.
  • Participate in analysis of emerging technologies, with a clear understanding of impacts to Operational processes, skillsets, and tools.
  • Advance the DevOps left shift of Application Development including leading the Operational Security team to identify, mitigate and resolve Security Vulnerabilities before they impact Production.
  • Participate and lead the Application Recovery of the annual Compliance and Disaster Recovery exercises.
What you need to succeed:
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, problem solving and consulting capabilities.

  • Effective at building and navigating relationships fluidly across the matrix of IT functions and Businesses.
  • Confidence in communicating, influencing, and coaching employees and leaders at all levels.
  • Ability to adapt and pivot through ambiguity and fast-paced change.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, including travel to different locations and to countries where services are delivered
  • Experience with ITIL, Service Management, Agile and DevSecOps Services are an asset.
  • Experience with vendor management and experience working with offshore resources
  • 5-7 years’ experience leading technical programs or large multi-faceted project initiatives.
  • 3-5 years involved in leading an Application support team.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
