Application review will commence on July 18, 2022DescriptionWestern School Division invites applications for the full-time permanent position of Operations Technician - Health and Safety Coordinator. This is a combined role with 60% hands-on Operations duties and 40% Health and Safety duties.Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor and collaborating with the Human Resources Manager, the successful candidate will work closely with administrators of schools and staff to support the Division in operational aspects of our facilities. This will include assisting the Facilities Supervisor with implementing and administrating the Facility Management System, programs, projects and practices that are aligned with the School Boards priorities, Division Strategy and current operational needs.As the Operation Technician, you are a point of contact for general maintenance, repairs and operations of the facilities in the Division. You work closely with the Facilities Supervisor to maintain and monitor the digital building control system, including HVAC, A/C, fire sprinklers, fire extinguishers, boilers and roofing systems as well as the building access system, including door access for staff and programming key fobs for all buildings in the Division. The successful candidate is mechanically inclined, an excellent team player, and is available to support Head Custodians and the Facilities Supervisor as needed. The incumbent is the point of contact for staff members and assists school custodians and the Maintenance Technicians, including the Journeyperson Electrician, in troubleshooting, repairs and maintenance projects.As Health and Safety Coordinator, you take the initiative to promote policies and initiatives of the Western School Division. The Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for assisting in developing, implementing and administering the Health and Safety program, updating and developing safe work procedures, organizing mandatory safety training and new employee orientation, attending specific training related to the position, investigating workplace incidents and providing reports, statistics and recommendations. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of the Health and Safety Regulations and Act and trends in the industry, including best practices and compliance with the current laws. S/he will educate employees in regard to health and safety practices and procedures, respond in a timely manner to address health and safety issues, and will participate as a member of the Health and Safety and Accessibility committees.The Incumbent shall exemplify strong moral values, high standards of ethical conduct, a commitment to the Divisions philosophy of education, and will demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and administrative skills.The ideal candidate will have post-secondary education or training in a related field, complemented with 1-3 years of progressive experience in similar roles. Experience working in the public sector is a definite asset. The successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge in the field and experience working under pressure and dealing with complex issues in a fast-paced environment with excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills. The incumbent must be safety cautious and able to organize, implement and administer health and safety programs, have the ability to develop safe work procedures, conduct safety talks, and conduct workplace health and safety investigations. The successful candidate must possess strong oral and writing skills in English. The ability to speak fluently in French is an asset. Having advanced computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office and other tools such as Zoom, Teams etc., is a must. The Incumbent must remain current with all applicable laws and regulations related to the position and promote positive relationships between Western School Division and its employees. The successful applicant will be required to travel to various school locations and organizations across the province when needed.
