Job Description

  • The Family Services Worker is responsible to work with clients to determine needs, to provide emergency food, clothing, transportation, and shelter, and to make the appropriate referral for that client so that they may access existing services and resources in community.
  • Assist in asset mapping of the community to determine what programs and services are available.
  • The Family Services worker is responsible to uphold the ideals, philosophy, and image of The Salvation Army always while fulfilling the employment responsibilities, and to ensure a spiritual emphasis is evident in all services offered.
  • Post Secondary degree or certificate in social work, counseling, or another related field preferred · Proven experience in client/customer relations · Knowledge of general office procedures, record keeping and filing · Computer literate with experience in MSWordamp; Excel · Ability to function as a member of a team, possessing proven interpersonal skills · Knowledge of Nanaimo and it #39;s Service Providers and social agencies · Must be able to work flexible work hours including days, evenings, and weekends · Valid Driver #39;s License and have own transportation · Must submit to and clear a Criminal record check · Must submit to and clear the Internal Child Abuse Registry Screening RESPONSIBILITIES: The Family Services Worker will:
  • Be the first point of contact for all clients coming into Family Services and assess their needs.
  • Assist in asset mapping of the community to determine what programs and services are available.
  • Deal with clients in a professional and sensitive manner, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect.
  • Complete client intake, assessment and follow-up, and complete administration of services according to standard Salvation Army policies, which includes maintaining confidential client records.
  • Provide advice and support to clients regarding resources, lifestyle, personal and spiritual challenges; referring to and consulting with professionals as required. Be prepared to pray with clients at their request.
  • Develop empathetic and supportive relationships with clients and volunteers.
  • Participate in a holistic approach to ministry which recognizes the needs of the whole person; physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
  • Link Family Services clients to Church ministries, as opportunity permits.
  • Ensure that date is entered and recorded using the data base system. Ensure that deadlines for submission of reports, statistics and other documentation are always met.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers, team members, staff of other Salvation Army programs and agencies within Nanaimo to ensure positive relationships are cultivated and maintained. Provide direction as required to volunteers.
  • Develop and maintain a very good working knowledge of service providers in the Nanaimo area, the main contact people, and a comprehensive understanding of the type and scope of services provided.
  • Assist the Community Ministries Director to ensure that required reports for Government, Salvation Army, and the Family are completed and submitted in a timely fashion.
  • Forward all financial donations to the Admin office for official receipts and thank you letters.
  • Issue vouchers for The Salvation Army Thrift Store, meals, travel and accommodation as determined by client need and Family Services Policy.
  • Assist the Community Ministries Director to identify gaps of service in the Family, to bridge the gaps with service providers.
  • Ensure general cleanliness and upkeep of the Family Services office area.
  • Complete a time sheet each working day accurately recording hours worked including sick days and holidays, total the hours, sign, and give the time sheet to your Supervisor at the completion of each 2 week pay period.
